It scares him, of course. But what doesn’t, by this point? And Jon hasn’t been able to indulge in wilful ignorance or self-deception the likes of which he used to be so very good at in so long. Maybe he can, here. Just a little. Surely some forgetful moments are a small price to pay for a moment in paradise?

And he saw, instantly, every little thing that had been Martin loving him from afar. Every undrunk cup of tea, every snack that appeared on his desk… all of it.
The words sat thick and heavy in his stomach, a weight he couldn't shift. He felt the floor fall away beneath him, knees buckling as he dropped, instinctively and protectively curling around Martin on the ground.
Martin didn't know he was here, not really, so he allowed himself this moment of weakness. Pain reverberated through this flicker in time, through this abject devastation, as he realised that his snubbing - however intentional - had helped drive Martin here.
