"I want to tie you up? Is that okay?""Last time you tried to cuff me, you were going to put me on a Sleep spell," Essek's smile is everything but friendly. But Caleb knows it's just a mask he tries to put on to hide how vulnerable he actually feels.
"Last time, I wasn't trying to make you come," Essek takes a deep breath. "You can say no. It's alright," Essek stays silent for a few seconds. Jester pats his shoulder in a comforting way. Caleb smiles at her softly before looking at Essek again.

Caleb likes to be slapped.
This is only a surprise to one of them. Caleb, of course, already knows what he likes. He may be shy when it comes to telling her, although they've both been teaching each other confidence over the past couple of months, and he may assume, for the first few weeks anyway, that anything he tells her will disgust her. It has taken a lot of kisses, and more than a few tactful reminders that Jester grew up in a literal brothel, to help him really get comfortable.
But he's had experience, after all. He's got over a decade on her (even if, as she insists, fully eleven years of that doesn't count since he wasn't really there for it, Caleb,) and she's not his first.
No, what surprises them both is how much Jester likes doing the slapping.

"Traditional Nicodrani weddings can take many forms, full of different customs and rituals and words, but today's ceremony is going to be short and simple. They only had a few weeks to plan it, after all — they have actually let a rumor circulate that Jester is pregnant in order to divert suspicion about the very short notice — and besides, the ceremony itself isn't the point. The point is to observe the Duke and the magistrate, to eavesdrop on them if they sneak away together at any point during the reception, and so Jester and the others have arranged for little more than a brief meditation, one song, and vows.
It will be fifteen minutes at the most, thinks Caleb. Maybe twenty, if things go a little long. He can get through it. It will be fine."

Summary

"Unfortunately, our progress has stalled out somewhat," Ikithon says, slowly circling the beacon on its stand. Under any other circumstances, that would be the thing that drew Essek's eye.
Instead, his gaze is fixed on the man sitting in a chair at the circle's center. A picture of misery, he is bound hand and foot to the chair with thick iron cuffs. His face is mottled with bruising, his rust colored hair hangs in limp, tangled clumps, and his clothes are torn and burnt. Wide, frightened eyes the color of daylight sky whip frantically back and forth between them.
Essek knows that face. He knows it all too well. Not two months ago, that face kissed him on the forehead and told him that he was still capable of good.
The bottom drops out of Essek's stomach. Please not him.
