“I must not have heard you correctly, Headmaster,” Severus said flatly.
“You did, my boy. This isn’t only a favour to me, you understand.”
“But there must be trust," Severus insisted. "A bond… or some sort of relationship between mentor and pupil for Occlumency to be taught correctly! The only bond the brat and I share is one of mutual loathing.”
“Now, Severus, you are an adult and a Hogwarts professor. Surely, you can find a way to mend broken bridges.”
Broken bridges? Broken bridges? There had never been a "bridge" to begin with! Not with Potter, the carbon copy of his school bully, who spoke, acted, believed himself so superior to anyone else he might as well be the second coming of his father. There had always only been damp planks slogging down a river which separated them on two opposite banks. No bridge to speak of.

Summer of Fifth Year. Dumbledore decides Harry should begin Occlumency immediately. Harry and Snape start seeing a lot of each other. Neither is thrilled, especially when they begrudgingly realise that maybe, possibly, perhaps, they might have more in common than they thought. -

“Where are your parents?”
“I don’t know where dad is, you’re acting so weird!” The last word was spat out like a curse, his little frame tensing in frustration. That exclamation seems to bring him to a boiling point, and suddenly his whole body slumps in defeat, all his previous zeal washing away like footprints to the tide.
“I saw Ace,” the boy admits in an uncertain little voice, like he shouldn’t even be saying that. There’s a strange weight to the words, as if he expects it to mean something to him as well. Those big eyes grow distant and misty, his bottom lip trembles. He looks like he’s about to cry. “…it was probably just a dream,” chewing his lip, his eyes slide to the floor to stare at his fallen sandal forlornly. He doesn’t seem to fully believe what he said, but continues to mutter anyway as if trying to convince himself. “I dream about him a lot, and Chopper says you can see things that aren’t real when your brain is being mean.. ha- haloo bin nations..?”
“Hallucinations,” Smoker corrects automatically, an uncomfortable twist wrenching in his gut.
That mop of black hair bobs once in a nod. “Yeah, that’s what I said.” It isn’t, but he doesn’t feel like arguing with a teary eyed kid.

Summary
“What did you pray for?” Shanks asked, poking at the baby fat filled cheek. Luffy swatted at him with a scoff.
He pursed his lips, “For Ace.” He said, casually, like it hadn’t swept the rug from out under Shanks and caused his gait to falter, entirely. He was frozen, in response. Luffy continued for several seconds until he realised the adult at his side was no longer there. He turned, perplexed, watching Shanks with a befuddled expression. Shanks held no rebuttal. “What’s wrong?”
“Why…” he almost didn’t want to ask. “Why Ace?” Luffy’s stare was long and hard. And for the first time, since meeting Luffy on that fateful day, all the way past the chaos of the Grandline, in the waters of the East Blue—Shanks could not place the expression that overtook Luffy’s supple features.
Alternatively, the story where Shanks and Luffy take steps on an arduous path to closure.
