Threat assessment follows close on its heels because Bucky’s a goddamn professional.
Military, definitely. Male, built like a goddamn mountain. Bucky stares helplessly because shoulders that broad should be illegal. It’s the face that really fucks him up though. Hair as silver as the star on his chest, swept back from a face that’s all hard angles and deep lines. There’s a beard too, covering a jaw that looks strong enough to sit on, and its white is peppered with bits of dark blond, which should look ridiculous but doesn’t.
“You seem to know my name,” Bucky says, plastering on a charming smile. “Only polite to return the favor.”
“If you’re banking on politeness, you might be in the wrong business, son.”

Summary
Bucky, a freelance operative: codename Winter Soldier, has been working with the Avengers on the regular, which was great, he loved the extra cash, could hone skills he’d picked up in the army and no-one cared about his metal arm. Best of all he got to work with Captain America, a man out of time whose identity is shrouded in secret, which made having a big fat crush on him problematic, since no one knew the Winter Soldiers identity either. But this doesn't stop Bucky being drawn to Cap in a way he’d never felt before.
So it’s a surprise when Natasha drops off a small injured mystery man 'Grant' to him for protection and to patch up, that he finds himself utterly taken with the snarky man. Feelings he couldn’t work out as Grant was the worst patient, stubborn as hell and pushed Bucky’s buttons in all the wrong (and right) ways. He needed to figure out who Grant was, and what he had to do with SHIELD before he either killed or kissed him stupid.
Throw in Hydra’s infestation of SHIELD, unsanctioned science experiments, being hunted and keeping identities secret, all while trying not to fall helplessly in love with a man who had more secrets than the Pyramids. Bucky’s simple life was now anything but.

It had been Bucky's idea. Sam wanted to keep that in mind as he evaluated the whole thing, but he couldn't tell himself he'd never looked Bucky over. Bucky was an attractive guy, especially nowadays. He was built, but he'd lost some of the aggressive thickness he'd maintained on the run, and now that he'd chopped off his hair, he wasn't quite so much MCR-fan-circa-2008. His new uniform was less aggressively bondage gear, and in general, he'd gone through an upgrade from scary assassin (who would maybe fuck you through a wall) to wise Wakandan hermit (who would probably give you a very sage hand-job) back to all-American beefcake who would bring your Mama flowers, while you sat there trying not to think about how good the sex was.
The point was: Sam had thought about it, even before Bucky brought it up.

It’s a very normal morning on a very normal Thursday when Steve Rogers pops into existence on Bucky’s patio.
With the kind of things Bucky has seen and the life he leads, this wouldn’t usually be cause for concern. Steve gets up to all kinds of shit with the Pym particles these days – something about time travel having inter-dimensional consequences. And since Steve exchanged Grant for Responsibility sometime between lying on army enlistment forms and crashing a plane into the Arctic, he’s running around under the careful watch of Hank Pym and Stephen Strange, doing things Bucky takes care not to ask about.
But the Steve Rogers that pops into existence on Bucky’s patio is not the right Steve Rogers.
He’s dressed all in black, for one thing.
