===Her hands shake as she steps out into the bedroom, robe partially covering the black outfit she had put on especially for this occasion. Dressing for sex? This really is a lesbian way to fuck. She’s usually in whatever mismatched underwear she wore with a flannel and tee overtop. She freezes when she hears him say, “Hey” and her reply is flat, but still throaty. God, he probably thinks it’s sexy and really she’s about to lose her mind – in an anxiety way.
She seems reluctant when she comes out of the bathroom. Maybe she’s changed her mind. But they’re here, aren’t they? And they’ve spent most of their time together since her birthday. It was so easy, almost too easy, to go from working on this case together to just hanging out as a family. And now they’re together. Alone. His lunch feels like it’s at the top of his esophagus but he manages to squeak out a plea from his seat on the bed – “C’mere?”

An her laugh pop out as quick as mine. “I seeeeee….so it’s a straight-up protection racket now? At least you admit it.” Her chuckles die down a lil, so I move back behind her, pullin her hips back toward me again.
“You know I gotchu,” he says holding me close from behind. “But think of it like a retainer,” I’m so glad he can’t see my eyes roll as he echoes Fitzpatrick’s words. Do all Detroit criminals go to the same trade school or something?

Between the booze and the music, I can even look out the window to his usual seat on the picnic table and it doesn’t hurt that much. A little twinge, but then happier memories: standing at this window to get revenge on Dean, seeing Rio helping Kenny with math, the first time I stood up to him on the back porch, and offering to make him a sandwich before he fucked me brainless on my marital bed. Mmm…maybe a “nap”…I don’t need a vibrator if I let myself open up some of the other memories I’ve got neatly stashed and labeled in the closet of my mind.Taking another sip, I turn and startle isn’t a good enough word to describe what happens in my body when I hear his voice over the music. It’s a full-body stop, all systems pause, seeing him in the doorway. My mind plays back his question about celebrating, and the chipper, “Nothing!” is the worst I’ve done at lying since before I fixed the stop sign.
