Summary
While others scurried away from Hua Cheng’s path, avoiding eye contact as if their life depended on it, Xie Lian never received anything but charming smiles that revealed dimples most people would be hard pressed to even comprehend the existence of, Hua Cheng’s eyes crinkled and his normally deep voice settled into something soft and sweet whenever Xie Lian so much as glanced his way.
Right then, though, there was something else marring Hua Cheng’s otherwise perfect view of his childhood best friend and long time crush, and it had its disgusting arms wrapped around Xie Lians perfect waist.

Hua Cheng hummed, and Xie Lian could feel the rumble of it against his own chest. “I like hearing gege’s heartbeat,” Hua Cheng admitted, eyes closed and body relaxed, his lips brushing against Xie Lian’s collar as he spoke.

Summary
“What did they do?” Hua Cheng demands. Then, to the robbers: “What the fuck did you do to him?!”
“San Lang, shh, don’t be mad. They tried to rob me, but they didn’t hurt me. Really! My face only looks like this because I fell into a rock!”
Hua Cheng wilts: this is devastatingly believable.
A pair of robbers accosts Xie Lian outside of Puqi Village. They were expecting an easy ransom from a rich husband. They were not expecting the wrath of Crimson Rain Sought Flower, or free relationship advice from the husband of the world’s leading expert in codependency. They got both.

She looked at him strangely, “Daozhang is the priest of this shrine, yes?”
Xie Lian froze, looking off to the side he coughed into his closed fist. “Ah, yes... I am.”
“Then you must know about the tale of eight hundred years!”
Xie Lian shook his head.
Qi Ling let out an indignant gasp. Looking at him with wide eyes and an even wider mouth, she frantically shook her head. Xie Lian couldn’t help but feel as if the roles were suddenly switched and now he was the one being admonished.
“Daozhang! You must have heard of it! It’s one of the Crown Prince of XianLe’s most famous stories. The tale of the scrap collecting god and his most devoted believer, how he waited eight hundred years for his beloved to return to him?”
Xie Lian choked on air. No he did not hear of such a tale. He would've known.
(or, Xie Lian hears a prayer in the middle of the night. Mournful and agonizing as it screams out his name with a deafening cry. When he goes to investigate he ends up learning more than what he had come for.
More specifically, why half his prayers are directed towards wishes for good marriage and love advice.)

It’s been so long, Hua Cheng thinks again, mourning for their years apart. He wouldn’t presume to mourn on Xie Lian’s behalf, but… he can tell that the centuries have not been kind to him.
And yet Xie Lian is still kind. He shared the only food he had with a stranger he met only a few minutes ago, then invited him into his home and his bed, unaware that his objectively meager offerings mean far, far more to Hua Cheng than the extravagant feasts and sprawling estate he has back in Ghost City.
Hua Cheng is still frozen, breathing only shallowly, automatically, so as not to rouse Xie Lian’s suspicion, even while sleeping. Xie Lian is inches away from him.

Suitors from across the country flocked to the Royal Capital, eager to try their luck in courting the elusive prince. But alas, the spot next to the Crown Prince continued to remain empty a decade later.
Exultant praises of the Crown Prince's beauty soon morphed into muttered scepticism. Maybe... there’s something wrong with the Crown Prince? Is he ugly? Disfigured? Unlovable? Or maybe, the challenges were truly too difficult.
The day of summer solstice, a mysterious figure appears. "My name is Crimson Rain Sought Flower," the masked man announces, "and I'm here to ask for the Crown Prince's hand in marriage."

Jack's face softens. "Listen, kid, I'm not a Corporal anymore - you can just call me Jack off-shift, alright?" Jack waits until Dennis nods to continue. "As for staying here, you're not imposing, okay. Robby and I are offering."
Dennis sucks in a breath. "I don't - I don't understand why, though."
"Why?" Robby repeats. "Because you're in a tough spot, and we can help."
