Summary
Here's the thing: Charlie's never really "fit in."
He existed in the margins, living on the line between natural and supernatural. The world was full to the brim with strangeness, but despite Charlie regularly and earnestly trying to articulate his experiences, he was always disregarded. Everyone else's eyes just glanced off the irregularities.
Then Mac was attacked in the bar. The beast towered over him, claws rending into flesh like knives through butter and jaws snapping rabidly. The light of the full moon that streamed briefly into the room before the door swang shut again illuminated its form just enough for Charlie to know.

"What are you doing?" Dennis murmurs, sounding open and honest and genuinely bamboozled.
"Kissing you. Shh," Mac says. Dennis' face is steadily turning red under Mac's attention, and Mac kind of loves it.

“What?”
"It’s just, I know you liked Scarlett… more, at the start, and you tried to get with her first, and that’s fine! But I keep thinking, am I just the second choice? The consolation prize? Like, you couldn’t have Scarlett, so you settled for me instead?”
“Like a rebound?” Finian echoes, aghast.

It's an extreme surprise to Yennefer when she wakes up alive after the Battle of Sodden Hill. It's an even worse surprise that she wakes up to a small, dark cell and dimeritium chains suppressing her power.
The worst surprise of all is probably the fact that Jaskier is trapped there too.

Part I - The Repentance Series
Mac’s gay. Mac loves Charlie. However, if he wants his father to love him, the church to love him, God to love him… He can’t be.

“Ah. Here we go, let’s see…” Luther muses. “You shall not lie with man, for it is an abomination. That’s a good one. What else… Ah yes, homosexuality is contrary to God’s natural order and results from rejecting God. Sound familiar? Let’s keep looking…”
Mac feels like he’s spinning out as Luther recites every possible bible verse at him that could be used to break him down. Every verse against gay people or sodomy, every verse about the obedience of sons and the discipline of fathers, every verse about lust and temptation. Mac bugs out. Eyes spacing, body curling in; he swears, he can actually feel the building blocks he’d spent the past couple of years cultivating with his happiness, contentment and intimacy actively fucking crumbling with every word that leaves Luther’s mouth. Everything he’s become, everything he loves being, everything he truly is and always will be… implodes.
Luther snaps the bible shut. “This is a holy book. And you use it as an ashtray.”
