At eight years of age, Ivan had bet that Till couldn’t spin around thirty times without stopping. Naturally, Till had set out to prove him wrong. On his twenty-second spin, he had collapsed onto the ground, sweat pooling under his arms, lightheaded.
Grief, he realizes, is the same. He keeps rotating on a single axis, watching the world pass by around him, but his feet remain rooted to the same spot. The condensation on the shower wall that looks like raindrops, blueprints circled in red marker, the jiggly bread pudding served at dinner, the kisses shared between rebels his age at the bar, and even the stars twinkling through the haze of clouds. No matter where he goes, all the distance travelled only leads him back here again.
Till supposes not all of them make it to twenty-three. Not him. Not Ivan.
(Or: A year and a half after the final round of Alien Stage, Till learns how to grow anemones at the rebel base. Remembering Ivan happens somewhere in between)

He presses his forehead against the glass of his small oval window, watching New York shrink until Ash could cup Central Park in his palm and let the Hudson cascade between his fingers, Lady Liberty sitting on his thumb.
He cranes his neck to keep looking even as the plane pulls him further and further away from his city. He lets it go, places a hand over his chest pocket, over Eiji's letter, over his heart.
It's lonely leaving home, but staying without Eiji would be even lonelier.
Ash can't wait to see him again.”

It is said that they fight against waterfalls, always swimming against the stream’s current so that when they one day reach the top of those waterfalls, they can shed their scales and become dragons.”
Thunder cracked in the doorway of the Okumura household, and from its light, her brother stood half-drowned in the doorway. Eiji was never the talkative type, but as he let the water drip from the floor into pools on the carpet without saying a word, thunder rumbling in the backdrop of Izumo, she knew that any words would have been choked out of him.
Eiji spared one small smile at her, dropped his suitcase by the shoe cupboard, and walked through the house with squeaking wet shoes. Kaori watched, frowned, and decided not to press.
He didn’t talk much about America.
