Summary
Henry and Alex had never gotten along particularly well. Despite living in the same neighborhood and attending the same schools since they were eight they had never gotten particularly close. In fact, if Henry were to take a guess, he would think that Alex flat out hates him. Alex’s older sister and one of Henry’s best friends, June, is always quick to correct him. Alex doesn’t hate you, she would say. He just doesn’t understand you. Henry didn’t quite believe her.
They aren’t close. So Henry can’t help but wonder why he seems to be the only one who notices that something is wrong.

Summary
One second Alex has the perfect life. At least, as perfect as it can be. His parents rule their country with kind and gentle hearts, beloved by their people. Until one night the palace is attacked and his parents are killed. Alex finds himself taken captive and brought before the Kelderan queen and given as a gift to her youngest grandson.
Henry is a Prince with no power. He fights to keep his heart and his morals intact while his family seems intent to watch him break. His sister, Beatrice, and best friend, Percy, are the only two people he can rely on. And then his Grandmother purchases a slave for him. He's disgusted and set on finding a way to help Alex go free but it isn't as easy as he had hoped.
Alex and Henry strike up a tentative friendship that soon starts to turn into something more. Henry tries to keep Alex safe but he feels himself losing his heart in the process. As Alex finds himself falling for Henry he has to make a choice, love or freedom. Both are faced with a seemingly insurmountable question. Can one truly love, if one is not free?

And yet some small part of him isn’t willing to accept it. Because no he did not see this coming and yes it is a total surprise so Henry can’t possibly be saying what Alex thinks he’s saying.
“I… Henry, I don't know what you’re talking about.”
“Christ Alex, it’s time we broke up.”
Alex is stunned into silence. He feels like his head is underwater as he tries to process what Henry is saying.

“Are you fucking kidding me?” Alex shouts into the white void. The snow muffles most of the sound. Of all the fucking people.
(After an ill-advised attempt to get off the mountain before a snow storm hits, Alex finds himself stuck for god knows how long sharing the too-large house of his least favorite neighbor. Good thing there are lots of bedrooms, so at least he can stay far away from Henry Fox. Right?)
