(After an ill-advised attempt to get off the mountain before a snow storm hits, Alex finds himself stuck for god knows how long sharing the too-large house of his least favorite neighbor. Good thing there are lots of bedrooms, so at least he can stay far away from Henry Fox. Right?)

Alex blames their last round of shots for the words that leave his lips. “Don’t be an asshole. Walk away. He’s mine.”
And Alex hears it. Audible only because of how close Henry’s mouth is to his ear. A whine. As Henry completely slumps into his hold, his fingers scrabbling for Alex’s where they’re cuffed together.
He doesn’t know if the guy gets the hint, or if he even fucking heard him, because before Alex can react, Henry is ripping himself from his hold, whirling around to face him. His breathing is erratic, his eyes wide and much darker than they had been a few moments ago. His lips, red and inviting, are parted as he stares into Alex’s eyes.
Frozen, Alex stares back, unable to form a single syllable.
It’s all the warning he gets before Henry is walking away, practically yanking him from the bar with their joined hands, while Alex is powerless to do anything but let himself stumble behind.
Or: Alex and Henry have to spend a drunken night handcuffed together.

The first time Henry sees Alex race, his brain can’t understand what he’s seeing. He’s 14 and Alex is 13, and Alex is smaller than everyone, but so much more confident and brave.
He pushes Philip wide and overtakes on the last lap, pushing the throttle down on his kart to cross the finish line a full second ahead of Philip.
“He’s bloody reckless!” Philip shouts, ripping his helmet off once he’s out of his kart. Like second is unacceptable.
Henry stops watching Alex celebrate.
Philip’s hair looks dumb.
Their dad laughs, dropping an arm around Philip’s shoulder. “He’s not. He just beat you.” He looks over at Alex. Henry looks, too, taking any excuse he can. “We’ll have to watch out for him.”

And it’s a damn shame, too, because Henry’s a culmination of every one of Alex’s types—dirty blonde and strong jawed with eyes he could drown in, broad shoulders and dainty collarbones covered in a shirt that might be a size or two deliberately too tight.
Alex can’t even blame him for it. It’s working wonders. Even his palm looks soft and inviting, tilted up and waiting to be met with his own. When he blinks, his lower lip juts out the tiniest bit.
