Summary
After suffering from what the doctors all said were stress-related dreams and hallucinations, Neuvillette goes on forced sabbatical until he could get a favorable medical evaluation that would allow him to return to work. In the meantime, he purchased property in the quiet mountains of the Beryl Region and moved from his condo to the countryside and assured Furina that he would be available for consultation or assistance if needed.
However the quiet sabbatical he had expected, which he had meant to spend fixing up the old house and clearing the old property, turned out to be not as quiet as he expected when he meets the enigmatic Wriothesley. As time passes, he learns that there is more to the area—and Wriothesley in particular—than he first thought. But to address that would mean acknowledging a few too many strange things like ghosts and the echoes of ancient wars and even older gods and mountains built from the bones of ancient creatures.
All of those things were crazy, crazier even than those awful stress dreams that Neuvillette used to have of screaming skies and blood rain. Because there was no such thing as ghosts and ancient gods cursed into human forms…right?

“This is not a negotiation.” Deirta Thelyss’s voice cracked the air like a thunderclap, sharp enough that even her ever-bustling flock of attendants twitched. “You will agree to this marriage, or I will have you cast from Den Thelyss for dereliction of duty. Is that clear?”
Essek held himself stiffly, his shoulders rising in affront. A dangerous lapse of control, considering the woman standing before him, and one he would berate himself for later in the privacy of his tower, but he couldn’t help it. To be bartered off as—as a diplomatic representative of all things. It was absurd, insulting. Was the prestige his accomplishments brought to the den not enough? The Bright Queen herself had awarded him the title of Shadowhand for the advancements he’d made to the field of dunamancy, advancements that had secured countless victories in the war. Why should he have to upend his entire life to accommodate some human he’d never even met?

Essek didn’t know what to think of the Mighty Nein when they first arrived, and that didn’t really change as he spent more time with them. They were foolish and impulsive at times, but each of them held a spark of potential. They didn’t deserve to die. With the help of dunamancy, he might just have the chance to change their fates.

A Shadowgast Groundhog Day AU where Essek is just trying to keep his only friends from dying and that leads to some other discoveries involving his feelings for a certain wizard. (Canon compliant up to Ep. 89).

Essek clung to her; his fingers gripped the front of her coat. He looked small in a way he never had before, frightened in a way that Caleb hadn’t fully processed he could be. It wasn’t Essek’s nervousness, the anxiety of a brilliant man who could see danger all around him, who could see the falling dominoes and the way the web he had woven had entangled him. It was the fear of a small child, or indeed, a stray cat—the fear of a creature trapped in a terrifying world it did not understand.
Essek, brilliant Essek, Essek who believed he could find the answers to everything, unable to understand a thing—the thought of it stabbed at Caleb’s heart.

There was never going to be enough time. Caleb was always going to die while Essek was still young. Essek knows that, he knew that from the start, but understanding death and knowing it are two different things. He simply thought this would be easier.

This is the story of a death, of a lifetime, and of coming to terms with loss. This is a story about time, and making the very best of it.

Summary
The last pieces of rubble settled.
Essek hesitated, then murmured a word, casting a soft purple light into his palm. Caleb blinked, still staring at the floor. He clenched a fist and fire swirled to life at his fingertips. The scattered papers on the floor, the mouldering tomes and the faded diagrams all burned, ash mingling with dust at their feet.
The flames ran their course, until Essek’s light was all that remained.
“Good.” Essek nodded as Caleb looked up. He met Caleb’s eyes as the tension in his chest faded to relief. “Good.”
Caleb watched him, emotions darting across his face too quickly for Essek to parse. They fell silent, the quiet of the ruins broken only by the halting drip of water.
Caleb continued to stare, and Essek bit at his lip as a different kind of tension made him fight not to move.

Summary
He does notice-- he's always been observant, it's a keynote of being a scholar, but the way he observes Caleb is and has always been far more keen-- that Caleb seems to feel the absence of one of the books that used to be tucked under his arm. He hadn't told Essek that part of things and Essek doesn't want to pry, but sometimes he has to remind himself that he and Caleb are together and there is a difference between prying and the shared and intimate knowledge between men like them. All he can do is ask, and if Caleb said a single word against it he'd drop it.
