Summary
It goes without saying that an orphan like Nicholas has never seen a Plant. From illustrations and descriptions, he imagines it as some sort of bulb or glowing ball suspended in a tank. They’re so rare and protected these days, kept away from the grubby little hands of anyone who doesn’t live in a major city.
But somehow, Nicholas knows what he’s looking at now isn’t a Plant. Even from the other end of the room he can see arms and legs and something human in there, swathed in something else.
Nicholas, all at once, is overcome with a sensation he’s only ever felt once before. Looking at the thing in the tank, his voice dies in his throat, overcome with a need to be quiet, to not disturb it. Not quite fear, but something so reverent every animal instinct in his brain begs him to obey. That not-Plant is something else. Not human. Not worm. Not alive and not dead. Something other.

Arms came over his shoulders, wrapping around his neck, pulling Wolfwood in close, Vash's face set in his neck, and Wolfwood's breathing slowed. He could feel the blonde and black strands at his neck, Vash's skin against his along with the heat of his chest against his back. It was warm.
Warmer than he deserved.
(Or: Before Wolfwood could leave to fight Chapel and Livio, Vash managed to catch up to him before he could leave. Everything would turn out differently in response.)

“You say that every time,”the man mumbles, sorting through the envelopes pausing on a red one before separating it from the rest and sticking it into a separate pocket in his oversized, red, duster. “Did I happen to get a bigger package?”
“That’s all the mail, dear.”
“Ah, yes. I meant a person. I’m expecting the last piece of my crew today.”
Georgia’s eyes narrow and flick over to Wolfwood, he’d shaken a cigarette out of his dwindling pack as he watched the interaction go down. He steps forward, tapping the man on the shoulder, shoving his hand forward when the man turns to him.
"I'm Wolfwood, nice to meet you." Wolfwood sticks the cold cigarette between his lips, grinning around it when the man takes his hand. The leather glove he's wearing squeaks against Wolfwood's palm when he squeezes.
"Vash. What's your specialty?"
"Break horses. Put any pony under me and I'll break it."
A blond brow quirks. "Any pony?"
Wolfwood smirks around the filter of his smoke, lazily dragging his eyes down from straw gold hair to the long plain of Vash's throat.
"Any pony."

His eyes snapped open. Slowly, painfully, he struggled to his feet, wrenching his head around to find the source of the voice.
“C’mon. Eyes up.”
The smell of cigarette smoke and dried sweat. Whiskey and old leather. Callused hands against his skin and a smile, a rough whisper, a laugh like the crack of a whip.
“Wolf…”
Wind blowing faintly against his cheeks as the confetti floated down, getting stuck in their hair. The clink of glass, gentle clatter of a bottle falling from a hand gone slack. A low exhale from the man at his side, almost relaxed, like a sigh.
“Wolf…wood…?”a conversation about dying, a conversation about living, and a conversation about staying.

The signal filtered through the receptor speakers so clearly and with so little interference that Wolfwood startled, as though a stranger had manifested in the cockpit with them. But it was still the five of them, frozen in their concentration. He didn’t recognize the voice or this lonely, haunted string of words, meaningless and unhelpful at the edge of the galaxy. No coordinates, no name, no identification. As if, more than anything, they wanted to be remembered, not rescued. It played over and over again like a song: I’m sorry, and I love you. I’m sorry, and I love you. I’m sorry, and I love you.
This wasn’t a distress signal. It was an elegy.

Nightow would be proud of this fic. It's a captivating blend of unexpected genres which flow like a crocheted sweater using various stitches and techniques and color changes to create one unique piece. Even if there are flaws (which I have yet to spot), there is the time old saying among fiber artists that we put our soul into our art, and it can only be released with the evidence that we are human and not perfect beings like Gods. I love fanfic.

(“you’ve been shot,” said Vash the Stampede, who shouldn’t’ve been there, who’d run away from home under Elendira’s watch at least two years before, maybe even longer ago than that. Nicholas had only seen him once or twice, but a face like that had been unforgettable.
“very astute.” There’d been copper and iron on his tongue, past his lips. “thanks for telling me.”
Vash’s hands covered his own and pressed down harder, his frown covering his whole face—furrowing his eyebrows, twisting his lips, scrunching his nose. Twins someone had told him at onboarding or whatever had passed for it, but the resemblance was passing. This had been someone different, distinct and disarming. A face broken in by softer expressions.
“keep that energy,” blood had been welling through Vash’s fingers, slower than it had been. The City said nothing in return. “i think i can fix this.”
“can i see your credentials?” His breath had blown bubbles through his chest. —and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning— “are you qualified for that?”
“i misspoke. you can take that energy down, like, half-a-watt.”)

“God, shut up,” Nicholas has his arms around Vash’s shoulders, has his body curled around as much of him as he can. He could stay here for years, he thinks—could spend his life here. Sentimentality like this is a terrible business model. “Shut up. I love you.”
Vash’s hands are kind things, reverent things, and Nicholas has never felt as breakable as he does when Vash touches him. “I love you,” and it’s heavy when it’s said like that, like it’s got eternities inside it. Nicholas can feel it in the footwells of his lungs when Vash says again, “I love you. I’m sorry.”
“Shut up,” it sounds wet when he says it for the third time. “Kiss me.”

And for once in his life, Vash did as he was told – he kept his mouth shut and kissed Wolfwood back in the dark. They could miss each other a million times, slipping just inches past each other without managing to catch the other’s hand, but when they managed to catch each other and hold on, they weren’t ever letting go. The world could end, and it would be just the two of them holding onto each other and wandering a wasteland trying to find a light.

Sometimes, Nicolas feels like that silence is too loud. It yawns at him in the quiet of his mind, a vacuum swallowing him whole.
Sometimes, the silence feels fragile. It shakes and fractures in the lessening space between them. Sometimes, it feels like they’re getting closer to a precipice, closer to total honesty.
Nicolas can almost trick himself into believing that they have time, that this peace will last. It’s easy, when Vash is very warm and very real, leaning into him as they watch the stars.
It’s like a dream, and Nicolas has always been afraid of dreaming. Because dreams end when you wake up, and you always wake up.
