It'd been months since the Republic put Lee Davis on trial for multiple counts of treason concerning her Team's "unauthorized" venture through Arizona, they even tried to blame her for Ace's death. They shipped them away from California, figures. It was the most passive-aggressive sentence they could give. What's more damaging to a legend than to dissipate their names in the lonesome desert? Let the Wasteland do what it did best.
