There’s a loud clatter as Mike Wheeler springs back from the phial of Amorentia after smelling it like it’s about to bite him, his hip slamming into the edge of a nearby desk. The impact sends it wobbling, and a potion book skids off the surface, hitting the floor with an unceremonious thud.
Mike glares at the book as if it personally offended him, making no move to pick it up.
Then he looks up—and catches Will’s eyes.
His face collapses instantly, twisting into something between horror and grief, and he drags his hands over his face like that might undo whatever just happened.
“Oh my god,” he says, muffled. “I’m so screwed.”
“What the actual fuck, Mike?” Max says flatly.

Will Byers has learned that normalcy is not in the pages for him.
He grew up abnormal. And, instead of growing out of it, he just grew into it. He stopped pretending that he wasn’t queer, he stopped being bothered by Zombie Boy, and, truthfully, he’s still overcoming the fact that he’s been used as a spy-slash-vessel ever since, but he’s been doing pretty good! Will is a freak, a nerd, a resurrectee, but he’s not going to let it plague him, because ever since the summer of ‘77 when he and Mike, six years old, laid on their stomachs and watched Star Wars, he knew the universe stuck Will The Wise upon the board, rolled for geekhood, and got twenty.
Will Byers was only fifteen years old, and all he did in his downtime was sketch, listen to music, and worry about what was next.
That was his normal.
That was, until he falls asleep so effortlessly one night that five minutes later, when an arachnid of no notable wonder crawls by, he is not there to witness when he rolls over and the spider panics, nips his hand, and henceforth changes the trajectory of his life.

“No.” He whispered.
His eyes flicked back up again, holding his breath when he saw Mike's sight fixed on him.
“You sure?” Mike asked again.
God. Will felt like he would faint.
“Y-Yeah… I'm sure.” He breathed.

“Don’t worry, I’ll do it,” Mike protests weakly, but Will ignores him. “You need to rest, yeah,” he continues softly, swallowing audibly at the thought of Will’s fingers on him again.
“I want to take care of—” Will mumbles, fumbling for gauze and bandages, his focus wavering. Mike notices the flush creeping up Will’s cheeks, bright and vivid against his otherwise pale, tired skin. And it warms something inside Mike, just a little, because Will wants to take care of him.

What the fuck.
Will guesses the shock must be obvious enough on his face that Mike feels he has to explain himself.
“So, you know, like - when you find someone you actually want to kiss, you'll know what it's like and you won't have to be as scared.” Mike’s eyes are frantic again and he’s slowly retracting the hand anchoring Will to the bed.
With panic coursing through his body, desperate not to screw his chance up, he catches Mike’s retreating hand with his own. Mike stares at their interlaced fingers, his eyebrows disappearing behind his bangs in shock.
”I-,” Will gets cut off. Mike was never really the patient one.
“You can just pretend I’m a girl, if you want.” His voice comes out strangled, nervous.

It’s seven at night and the party is gathered in Mike’s basement, drunk on laughter and cold pizza and togetherness. Will is in his wizard costume—well, the cape is draped across his lap as he stretches out on the couch and the tall, pointed purple hat is askew, a couple jostles away from falling straight off, so maybe he isn’t exactly in costume, but he doesn’t really care at this point, because the room is full of warmth and giddiness and he hasn't felt so at peace in what seems like forever. Mike is sprawled out on the floor below him, snorting at the sight of Lucas and Dustin as they wrestle with each other.
Will and Mike sneak away to make out.
