Very reluctantly, Greg is allowing Roisin to drag him along to a paint-and-sip evening at a local studio. She’s promised there’ll be wine and a bit of fun, but mostly he’s agreed just to shut her up. What does he know, after all, about art? Nothing! It’s all just making dumb marks on paper that he’s never been any good at anyway.Greg feels spun around. Confused. “Wait, model?” Carol shoves a box of charcoal at him, and he takes it, blinking.
“A quick reminder for everyone to be respectful and mature about this. The human body – beautiful and interesting and unique is already a work of art , so let’s make art of that art. Art squared! Now…” She raps on the door, and steps back with a flourish. “Everyone give a nice polite welcome to our model for the evening – Alex!”

Greg didn’t really know what the rules of the task were, but he was absolutely positive that no one was following them from how red Alex was getting. He was yelling (or as best as he could manage) at one of the contestants.
And then suddenly he wasn’t. Greg’s eyes were always drawn to Alex so he saw the moment, the moment that Alex collapsed. Like a puppet with cut strings, his entire body going slack.

[edited to include a photograph of a crochet pixie!Alex at the end] It had gotten so bad Roisin had dragged him to the doctor, and now Greg was here - at a last-minute booked AirBnB in the countryside with strict instructions to rest and for god's sake - get some sleep. As if it were that easy; every inch of Greg ached with exhaustion, but sleep? Sleep was so much worse.
Greg resolved to get through the next few days grumpily, miserably, and - of course - devastatingly alone in the entirely rational, and not magical at all, picturesque little Horne Cottage.
A rambling, gentle, melancholy, and silly story of Greg and an even more little than usual, Alex, meeting and becoming friends. Alex is a fluttering little pixie in this. Greg is still Greg.

Summary
[edit 6/18/23: Animation added to chapter 22] A sci-fi space fic where Greg is a spaceship, and Alex is an escaped, drug-chemist, slave. They have a bad time, finding comfort in each other.
After decades of indentured servitude on Al Murray’s private moon, Alex has made a break for it – scrambling through a junkyard in a desperate bid for freedom. He’s terrified, bleeding, and fears a laser blast in his back at any moment, but he would never in a million years expect to literally stumble upon a half-junked spaceship from the war in need of a name, a purpose, and most of all, a friend.
He reaches out his hand, and carefully wipes away years and years of dust from the cold metal surface – feeling the engraving rippling on his fingertips. The plaque reads “Geran Republic 3Ө, Stellar Monitor Warship” There’s a date too – which seems to be the commission date – forty-three years ago.
