The Traveler has met the dreaded Balladeer three times already - by sheer misfortune. This time, however, their encounters will have nothing to do with luck, and everything to do with the strange acquaintance they share. And Aether is not quite sure he understands any of it.
Or: an alternate version of the canon storyline, where Scaramouche and Aether form an uneasy alliance in Inazuma and unwillingly learn more about each other, leading them to grow closer than they ever intended.

The first thing you’re expecting is that you’ve got stupid kids playing some kind of prank or starting trouble, so you storm into the barn in a huff, ready to catch a teenager crawling into somewhere he shouldn’t. You slam the door open and adjust your grip on your shovel, thoroughly ready to be scary.
But instead of some dumb kid, the muddy footprints lead back into the darkest part of the barn, where there aren’t any windows. You flick on the lights... and hear a quiet whine from deep in the back corner. That’s. Not normal. And definitely not the sound of a malicious trespasser.
“Alright, who’s in here?” you call out into the still air. “Better come out now. You’re on my land, you know, and trespassing isn’t welcome.”
No answer. Fine. You’ll go find out who it is on your own.

Tonight, you went out. The plan involved a social gathering with some friends you hadn’t seen in a while, you’d told him shortly before you’d left, and you’d likely be late getting back. Kyoujurou had nodded along without complaint— keeping a demon informed of your plans is an unnecessary kindness, to begin with, after all, regardless of his feelings on the matter.
He can be patient. One late night is nothing to fret over. He’ll follow your usual schedule, go to bed at the same time as always, and you’ll be home again in no time. Kyoujurou keeps trying to tell himself that, but the hours tick by at an agonizing crawl, and the creeping sense of agitation only deepens as the night drags on. Anxiety weighs heavy in the pit of his stomach, and forcing himself to stay lying down only seems to make the jittery, need-to-move tension spread all the way down to his fingertips.
The dark, empty house is much too quiet without another heartbeat nearby.

Summary
You hear about the demon by chance. As in, through one of those disturbing flyers that advertise a living thing similarly to how one would a used car or pile of old, ill-fitting clothes. The piece of paper is tacked to a telephone pole near where you live. You see it on accident.
‘Adult demon, damaged. Price negotiable.’
Staring at the black and white lettering makes you feel vaguely sick. You look away. Ignoring something like this is for the best, after all.
But the thought keeps nudging at the back of your mind for the rest of the day. It won’t leave you alone. The word damaged echoes in your skull on loop until you can’t take it anymore. Even if it’s just to sate your guilty conscience, you’re going to have to do something. Surely, the demon has been bought already. Even if you look into it, there’ll be nothing to find.
