Fire Lord Zuko was...different.
He thanked the servants for doing their jobs. He wouldn’t get angry over accidents or mistakes, either. It was slightly off-putting, as far as Chihiro was concerned. If Chihiro hadn’t been watching, she wouldn’t have believed it herself.
She didn’t entirely believe it anyway.
Still, surely something of importance would come of the new Fire Lord’s strange behavior.
Though, to be fair, she thought to herself as a half-masked figure leapt at her from the shadows of a pillar one evening, she hadn’t thought that that ‘something’ would be an attempted coup.
(Or, in which a palace servant decides, yeah, I'm protecting this kid.)

The prince who used to care so much about returning home that he would go from one end of the globe to the other and back around more times than Aang would like to estimate, now cares nothing for the man who sent him away. The kid in the oversized helmet with the silly ponytail telling Aang he would take his staff and gift it to his father? That kid is gone. He grew up.

Zuko is a smart kid. He knows many things, like the first five katas from the advanced set his tutors started him on, and the defeat of the Xachu Island rebellions of 44 AG. He knows that Azula was the one who stomped up all of the garden roses two weeks ago, even though she told their mother it was a servant boy.
He knows that when he notices a faint burn on the inner curve of his wrist and hears the ticking of clock gears when there's no clocks to be found, he should tell exactly nobody.
Or,
A soulmate timer AU, where soulmates are those whose paths will have great impact on your own, but fate is more easily swayed by choices than it would seem. If both of you make it to a certain point in your lives and your relationship together, the timer goes off, cementing the roles you will have for each other. Until then, anything can happen.Zuko has five potential soulmates. This changes surprisingly little, in the grand scheme of things.
(Requested by my friend for her birthday, who said, "you know what would be cool? More ATLA family soulmate AUs." And I said "what a great gift idea!" made it into a character study and proceeded to sit on it for two years. Whoops. Happy birthday!)

Ozai stared at the flame of the torch in front of the cell. There was not much else to do in that place forgotten by everyone, and in order not to lose that minimum of sanity he had left, he had to do something.Staring at a flame in the hope that something would happen could be deleterious, but there was no alternative.
“Come on, you stupid flame. Move."
But nothing happen: the flame crackled, regardless of the efforts of the now-former Fire Lord.
"Prisoner, you have a visitor."
Finally a break from the usual monotony.
The guard let in Iroh, his expression neutral, as if he didn't know how to behave with him. And hadn't it always been like this since Ozai was a child and Iroh a young man?
"Ah, brother. Have you come to see your triumph?" he laughed at him, the bitterness that filled his words.
[Four people come to visit the former Fire Lord, but none of them are who he is waiting ]
