It didn’t take him another half second to rip the door open, nearly pulling the old wood off of its hinges. The door handle snapped under his hand and hung by a single buckle. He didn’t bother closing it behind him.
Willow was in the same spot she had laid down in. Luz had a careful arm around Gus, they sat curled up on the couch watching closely. Amity and Camila were on either side of Willow. Amity ran her hands through her hair while Camila braced her weight to her chest. Willow was wailing out a mix between screaming and sobbing. And she kept saying his name.

Above all else right now, he just so wishes they had time – time for him to hook his arms under the crook of her knees and back and take the weight of her up off her feet so that she could focus on the weight in her chest, time for them both to cry for longer than a measly few minutes (what a joke, he can’t help but scoff), time to clutch his chest in gratefulness and grief and gold.
But they don’t have that right now.
Instead, the two of them sit in silence, Hunter watching (although he’s not really watching anymore, even when Gus and that boy start tussling in the grass, not when there’s green, green, green filling up the corner of his eye), Willow pressing her back up against the rough, hewn bark of the fir behind them so that she can stare upwards between the prickly red fronds. The sprindles are sharp and sweet-smelling, swollen with sap as they are, and the scent breathes into them even this far below. It’s a smell Hunter’s come to associate with the isles. What a comfort it is, to sit with it again. The fragrant pines of the human realm were nice, but not enough.
Not enough.

Summary
Hunter takes a deep breath and feels a thousand needles prickling under his skin. A familiar red bird moves slightly against his side from where he hides under his cloak. He moves to speak and his ribs strain against layers of fabric constricting the masses of flesh, feathers, and muscle sprouting for his back.
Belos digs his claws into Hunter’s shoulder and it’s a miracle that he doesn’t feel the fear radiating off of him.
“I have nothing to hide”
He wonders if the lie would taste less bitter if it wasn’t spoken by a mouth that tastes of blood.
Aka- in a world where witches grow hybrid traits from the animal making up their palisman when it bonds with them, Hunter finds himself plucking feathers, holding back chirps, and binding his wings in order to keep himself alive. After all, Belos would never forgive him for having (and hiding) Flapjack.
And wooo, does this look like it’ll be a long one!

It didn’t matter what it was couched in, what insult or reprimand or obfuscation he had to swallow alongside it, hearing Belos say the word love in his general direction could sustain his faith and determination for months at a time, which was lucky, because it often had to.An inverted 5+1 things focused on people telling Hunter they love him.

Summary
It takes a few minutes for Luz to emerge, and Hunter straightens up instantly. Her hands are shoved in the pockets of Eda’s grudgeby jacket and her head is low and her shoulders are tense and shaking. Something is wrong here, and just a moment later Hunter sees what.
A sharp peal of laughter announces the small group that follows Luz out, led by a girl with orange hair pulled back in a ponytail. She’s holding something out in her hand, and the others in her group lean closer to Luz, sneers twisting their faces even as they continue to laugh.
Rage flares in Hunter’s chest. “Hey!” He barks, pushing off the railing and up the steps. His golden guard voice comes back to him instantly, and for once he welcomes the threatening rumble of it in his throat.

“Have you ever thought about dying?”
It was late, sometime between midnight and sunrise when the world slept quiet and peaceful beneath the gently blinking eyes of the stars. Hunter hummed from where he stood leaning back against the counter, just out of arms reach from Luz’s hunched-over form sitting at the table with her head resting on crossed arms. His eyes stayed firmly on the glass of water in his hand, and she watched him swirl it around, waiting for an answer without impatience or urgency because she knew she would get one, because he always answered her even if the answer was ‘I don’t know’, because this was the millionth conversation like this they’d had since getting stuck in the human realm and they’d both already asked and answered far worse questions than that.
OR Luz and Hunter have a midnight talk about death, grief, and questions that were better left unanswered.
