Summary
She startles awake to the sound of Hooty yelling, abruptly sucking her out of the half-asleep state she had been in. She grabs her glyphs on instinct, one of the stacks of paper she leaves around her room for easy access.
When she finds Hooty, he has the door wide open and the body of a teenage boy slumped against the doorframe. A boy who is swathed in red from blood and grasping onto his staff like it’s the only thing keeping him from face planting.
And as Luz walks closer, the light of the moon catches on platinum blonde hair and she suddenly realizes that it’s The Golden Guard in the doorway.
Or, Hunter, his Palisman, and the wild witches who took him in.

Darius looked somewhat startled by Hunters immediate professional attitude. It must've have given him whiplash to see someone go from bleeding out, to having a vivid night terror, to being so efficient. Hunter felt a tug of pride at how quickly he composed himself.
He was rather good at that.
"I...see. And what is the nature of this spell?"
Ah. This was the part Hunter was dreading.
He grimaced. "Darius," he said, steadying himself, "I can't lie."

Hunter, now used to her random questions that came out of the blue, responded easily. "My uncle didn't really want me to read the books I did," he frowned, like he didn't quite mean to refer to the man as his uncle, "But Belos couldn't actually stop me, short of stalking me around the castle."

hunter expects the human realm to be at least somewhat similar to that of life on the boiling isles. it isn’t, and he struggles to come to terms.

If you ask him if he’s doing ok, he jumps to tell you how fine he is with desperate urgency, as if it’s illegal to be caught with his guard down, almost like he’s hiding something. He goes around acting like he is completely unbothered, all while his hands shake at his sides and eyebags continue to darken.
Willow can't watch him suffer.

Two days before Halloween, the smell of oil finally comes out of their clothes.
