Summary
Dennis Whitaker, a scrappy looking med student from Broken Bow Nebraska, has an issue. And that issue starts and ends with Dr Micheal Robinavitch. His unfortunately good looking attending at Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center. His second issue, takes the form of a 5’10 night shift attending he is sure is straight from a magazine he had to stash under his bed as a teenager.
Navigating trauma is already hard enough without the gaze of both of his attendings burning a hole into the back of his head. But what he doesn’t know is that they both just want to help. And they will go to any lengths to make sure Dennis is safe. Even if those lengths are a bit… unbecoming of two men in their fifties.

“I’m sorry,” he says, turning heel and resisting the urge to just book it right for the front door only because he’d rather not have to explain to Hayden why he returned from a hookup with Boston Lily in men’s clothes that he certainly didn’t leave in.
It’s not until he makes it halfway up the stairs to Rozanov’s bedroom that it occurs to him in a cold rush that it isn’t just anxiety that makes it this hard to breathe.
“No,” he tells himself firmly, white knuckling the bannister and trying to take a deep breath just to prove that he can.
It wheezes.

“‘Ah’,” Ilya repeats, giving him a look before he looks back to the tidily stacked frozen mouse packages in the freezer and makes a face as a little badly-hidden shudder moves through him. “Why the fuck do you have mice in your freezer, Shane? You are doing serial killer shit now? This is why you have cottage in the middle of nowhere? For serial killer things?”
“It’s for Spaghetti,” Shane says.
Ilya gives him an absolutely horrified look at that and turns a little green, which makes him remember that Spaghetti isn’t just his snake's name.
“Not food!” He rushes to explain. “Not food spaghetti! Snake Spaghetti!”
“What the fuck are you even saying right now,” Ilya says, looking honestly a little concerned that Shane might have something going wrong in his head.
(Distancing himself from almost twenty years of owning a snake, Shane can indeed see why this situation might be a little alarming for someone on the outside looking in.)
(It also clues him in to the fact that maybe it’s not just Spaghetti who should have gotten a little adjustment period.)

“What the fuck, Ilya? You’re a fucking serial killer.” He backs up into the bedroom slowly, the way you’d retreat from a raging bear, until his back hits the sliding glass door, cool against the broad span of his shoulder blades.
Ilya tuts, a feral look in his eyes, “Not a serial killer, a spree killer. You should know this, Hollander. Is it not your job to catch men like me? Or are you too busy turning a blind eye to the abusive assholes you work with, too busy covering up their crimes?”
What’s the difference between a cottage and a cabin? The amount of spree killers present, apparently. Shane’s place has quickly gone from quaint lakeside cottage to a nightmare cabin in the woods.
It doesn’t help that the killer happens to be the man Shane loves, or that his chances of survival are dwindling by the minute. Turns out, red flags just look like ordinary flags when you’re wearing rose-coloured glasses, though one would think a homicide detective would be able to sense when he's being stalked.
