His cat, Pork, is permanently miserable. After exhausting every sensible option, Shane turns to the supernatural for assistance.
After their first appointment, Pork grows visibly happier - his cat’s found a hobby and renewed sense of purpose for achieving his only goal: to destroy Ilya for good.

"Never have I ever fucked my student," Ilya said. Shane narrowed his eyes at this, parsing the words.
"That's a stupid one," Shane said, his defenses lowering and his words slurring a bit. "You don't have your own students." He kept his remaining fingers raised, and purposely did not take a sip to show Ilya his answer.
"Hmm, very interesting," Ilya said. "So this is special occasion." Shane did not have the faculties to further parse Ilya's words, so he used one of his defenses when he was overwhelmed: he closed his eyes. He realized how tired he was, sort of all of a sudden, probably due to the alcohol. And from pretending I don't want him, his traitor brain added. He rested his head on the back cushion of the couch, feeling the day and his pushed-away thoughts wash over him.
He suddenly felt Ilya's body weight rest on his legs. His eyes flew open, meeting Ilya's gaze as his face got closer to Shane's.
"Ilya," Shane started to protest. "We shouldn't."

“Hollander.” Shane’s head snaps back to his left. Ilya is much closer, pace slightly hurried. “Come here.” His voice sort of mimics the way one would talk to an animal paralyzed in fight-or-flight. Shane is not sure what to make of that.
He slowly turns his head in the opposite direction, where his vision tunnels on the door for the stairwell. It almost glows like a special item in a video game, like a hint. Without giving himself time to doubt, he bolts.
“Wha- Hollander, what the fuck!” Ilya shouts in audible disbelief, and Shane distinctly hears matching thuds of frantic footsteps behind him; Ilya is chasing after him. Shane runs faster, positively sprinting at this point. He’s the fastest skater in the NHL right now. He can do this. He flings the door open and bounds down the steps two at a time, hitting the walls with each turn of a corner. If he eats shit on this filthy floor and embarrasses himself in front of Ilya, he thinks, he’ll never let himself see the light of day ever again.
