Twenty-four year old Terzo is home from college for the summer and determined that this will finally be the year he charms his childhood sweethearts. But when a Ghoul is accused of murder, the tension that’s been building between the human Clergy and Ghouls experiences a sharp rise. With the tensions growing higher and past wrongs coming to light, Terzo finds himself leading the charge in defense of Ghouls.
Fourteen year old Perpetua is alone. He lives in a closed wing of the Abbey, kept away from the public by the order of his father, apparently for his own protection. That is, until a young Ghoul comes literally crashing into his life and, seeing the opportunity that Perpetua’s secret reign of the Abbey presents, the two begin a game as “spies”.

He thought he’d gotten used to Terzo’s behavior by now, but there was something different about seeing him behave like that on stage in front of thousands of people. Secondo had passed the torch on, proud of his brother for taking his place. There was no one better suited for the position, and he felt confident in that fact as he left the stage to watch his successor’s very first ritual.
Stupidly, it had not occurred to him that his brother would perform his songs, nor that he would… perform them.

Perpetua hadn’t done anything wrong. They had done something wrong together, but neither of them knew, and Perpetua was no more at fault than Copia.
”I’m sorry,” Perpetua whispered, and Copia had to resist the urge to gently shush him and kiss his head. He couldn’t. Not… not right now.
“You have nothing to apologize for,” Copia told him firmly. “I freaked out over… over something someone said. I shouldn’t have taken it out on you. I’m sorry, Pet.”

No such ritual existed, of course, but he was interested to see just how naive and trusting this new Papa might be.

Turning to face him, Copia felt a twinge of guilt when he saw the wide-eyed, nervous expression on Perpetua’s face. He looked so trusting, like Copia was his mentor who he needed to teach him how to be Papa and show him what to do.
He should have figured that out before taking Copia’s job.

The crowd was still loud, but Perpetua had assumed the Nameless Ghouls and Ghoulettes were out there entertaining them, giving them something positive to end the ritual with to make up for his shortcomings.
Could they be waiting for him?
After taking a deep breath, he straightened his back and returned to the stage.
The roar that greeted him was nearly as deafening as when he’d first presented himself that night.
They did want more of him.
Frater had lied.

As he stood rooted in place, feeling like the world was tipping beneath his feet, the words of the late Sister Imperator echoed in Perpetua’s mind.
“Do not listen to any nonsense about initiation rituals or any other bullshit like that. He’s just messing with you. If he tries it, tell him I said to knock it off.”
It was exactly as she had said, and the accuracy would have made him laugh had he not felt like the flames of hell were snaking their way up his body, eager to consume him.
“Would you like to go through with it now?” Frater asked in a low voice, eyes piercing into his soul.
Perpetua did not hesitate, his need effectively pushing Sister’s warnings to the wayside.
“Yes, Frater.”
