Cursing under his breath, Jin Ling quickly decided that the best strategy would be to divert jiujiu's attention to something else, so he asked, “What did they want?” To his surprise, it worked.
“My hand in marriage.”
“What?” Jin Ling sputtered, confused by the phrasing, and then he heard a soft snort.
“Apparently, I need a wife who can make me happy.”
“Are you unhappy?” Jin Ling asked carefully. Before, he'd always thought jiujiu had just been like that, grumpy and quick to anger, but loving underneath it all. Now he knew that jiujiu had been softer once, more trusting, way before the war; he had proof of that in the form of a folded piece of paper that lay proudly next to his mother's comb and his father's guān.
“Ha! No, no more than usual,” he huffed. “And that's not your concern anyway. I'm happy when you're happy.”Or: Jin Ling comes to Yunmeng to celebrate the Lantern Festival with his uncles, ends up solving a mystery case, and acquires more family members.

Jiang Yanli knows that she is unremarkable and disappointing.
Her constitution is weak, and her energies must be devoted to keeping her lungs full and her heart beating. She possesses neither the reflexes for skilled swordsmanship nor the sharpness for archery. Worse still, she lacks the ambition, the drive, the spine that is required of a sect heir.
The physicians and healers at Lotus Pier warn her family to strictly limit her efforts at cultivation, as she cannot divert too much qi from her body’s primary needs. Cultivation leaves her prone to headaches, fainting, and most dangerously, the risk of qi deviation.
Jiang Yanli can only ever cycle her qi in slow drips and thin streams. So she learns over the years to be patient with it. To be like the water, slowly wearing away at wood, stone, or whatever lies in its path towards its purpose. If this is the way for her to slowly work her qi, to carefully gather it and collect it in a usable form, she will take it.
If her qi is too weak to cultivate by sword, she will cultivate by needle.

It never turned out like that, becoming the last in a long list of unfinished dreams and changed plans as the reality of their situation caught up to them. Camila knew it was for the best, she barely had enough time to look after Luz like a girl her age needed after what she'd gone through, but maybe her heart had never really closed the door on the possibility.
Whatever tentative rekindling of the prospect she'd felt at the thought of raising Vee and Luz as sisters once her daughter finally found her way home was utterly unprepared for what Luz would bring with her. Camila wasn't sure she was equipped to help Luz with everything she'd gone through in the Demon Realm, let alone look after the five otherworldly refugees staying in her home.
Manny would've definitely gotten a kick out of watching her try though.
