He opened his eyes, quite groggy, and was confronted with what seemed to be an explosion of flowers and plastic balloons. He tried to sit up, and when he couldn’t, he tried to speak. But he couldn’t do that, either, as it turned out. Instead, he could only look around his bed in horror. There were teddy bears and cards and bouquets and piles of sweets.

He lifts the handset and dials the number again. Same voice, this time less friendly.

“Wrong number!” The voice tainted by annoyance. No apology this time. Just the click.
