Summary
Brendon had been on the swim team in high school and then undergrad, the source of his scholarship. She’d seen the pictures, knew where the Shark nickname came from, a joke for a boy who was sometimes a little too serious, a little too intense, a lifeguard who didn’t let things slide, the sharp sound of a whistle cutting through the air, the scolding in its full intensity towards parents twice his age who didn’t pay attention to their children’s fragile lives in the water.
His hands wrapped around her ankles as he reached the wall again, head popping above the water, all messy hair and a "hi" pressed into her kneecap. The tops of his shoulders were red and freckling from the sun.
“How was your day?”
“It was alright,” Samira told him, “I caught a heart attack.”
Park grinned.
“That’s my girl.” He slid his hands up her legs, thumbs rubbing at her hip bones through her shorts, “You should hop in, tell me all about it.”
. . .
Park misses Joy's arrival.
The pieces get picked up later.

Summary
Later, he’ll hold their daughter up to the display case and let her pick out of its frosting-laden offerings, knowing that his mother would consider the piped-on flowers to be vanity. Would she have a cake of her own, today? Made by her own hands, most likely, or by one of his sisters-in-law, buttery and sweet with a topping of walnuts and brown sugar? He’s made it himself, almost-right, always missing something, but Hannah enjoys it. He brings the tray of it to work, nuts replaced in the batch with streusel, and leaves it in the break room. Grits his teeth against the sick feeling in his belly when the tray is empty at the end of the day, as if his people enjoying her favorite dessert, unbeknownst to her, can serve as a replacement for the confrontation they will never get to have.
(There is no closure to be found there, he will simply never understand. It's better that way.)

Summary
He found her handwriting in his notebook when he was lying in his bed that night, a couple procedure codes jotted down at the top of a page in glittery lavender ink and beneath it a frowny face. Sorry! She'd printed, and he found himself missing the swirl of her cursive, I thought this was mine! - Emma
He didn't take the page out. He also didn't let himself sit and trace the letters with his fingertip, but it was a close call

Summary
Robby rubbed his eyes, adjusting his glasses as he scrolled down the list to the last chart on the board, and paused.
DOE - MATEO - AWAITING PEDS ADMIT
“Baby Doe still isn’t upstairs?” Robby leaned back in his chair, clicking open the chart to find nothing more recent than the last vitals log an hour ago, and no new messages from the pediatric department to boot, “You’re kidding.”
“Afraid not."

“It hasn’t been an easy shift,” she whispers.
“I know, baby.”
