“All okay?” Bucky couldn’t help but ask. “FRIDAY messaged.”
“FRIDAY’s a snitch,” Steve said. “Contractions every 20 minutes for the last couple of hours. They’re not a big deal. Just some pressure.”
Bucky had more than enough experience of Steve brushing off concern and pain, but that wasn’t what Bucky saw when he looked at Steve in the canteen. He saw a man entirely relaxed, slouched back against the cushioned bench, far enough from the table that there was room for the expansive stomach which housed their twins. His shoulders were loose, his eyes bright but uncreased. He was being truthful. He was fine.
Nevertheless, Bucky checked, “They’re regular though?”
“Like clockwork.” A smile spread across Steve’s lips, lazy, slow and revealing a muddled pride. “It’s happening.”

Bucky had been having his own private laugh at Steve, who was grousing for at least the 19th time in his pregnancy that Tony should repurpose Stark Industries to improve the design of seatbelts for anyone carrying a baby for 5 months or more.
They’d been laughing and then they were gone. Bucky's children gone. Steve gone.

Summary
Having just come back from his run, Steve looks like a picture in a magazine, T-shirt tight but sweat pants loose, the exercise barely affecting him beyond a slight sheen of sweat on his skin. He’s not even breathing hard, completely photo-ready. Steve’s the reason why Bucky is standing by the kitchen counter at seven in the morning when he would much rather be still in bed. After the first few days, when Steve finally would allow Bucky to be out of his sight for longer than five minutes, Steve had reverted to his set morning routine, slipping out of bed before dawn when all sensible people are still trying to sleep. It had taken Bucky two days to catch on and adapt to the new situation. Now, every morning, though he’s loathe to leave the bed that smells of him and Steve, Bucky rolls himself to his feet about an hour after Steve leaves to ensure that he’s by the door when Steve comes back. If he doesn’t, Steve will head straight for the shower to wash off all of the hard won sweat that Bucky would like to drown himself in.
(Or, since being rescued, Bucky's relearning what he's missed. Steve goes into heat. Pretty much complete porn).

Summary
Steve's rarely been touched in a way that didn't equate to some kind of hurt. The cold metal of a stethoscope against his frail chest or the sting of a needle drawing yet another blood sample, when he was a sickly child. The bone-shattering punches thrown by the neighborhood bullies on the playground, or by his own father at home, drunk and wild. His mother, weak and clutching at him as she grew more incoherent with the drugs as the cancer ate away at her insides. Touch was something he shied away from, something he told himself he just didn't want.
Except...he did. He just didn't know how.
Until he finds a flyer for a local "affection and intimacy services" program.
In which Steve learns how to become comfortable with touch, and there is one very good dog, and a slow-burn romance.

Summary
Steve has no plan. Not because he hadn't tried to make one. He'd tried to make lots of plans. Plan, adapt, plan again, tried to think of every contingency.
And then he'd thrown them away, because there wasn't much point. What could you plan for? He couldn't guess the possible contingencies, the situations, the potentials. And he sure as sure hadn't figured on what's happened now, on coming back to his place and finding Bucky here. He hadn't even hoped for that.
He hadn't realized he could.

He pushes past her and looks through the window. Inside, a man prowls like a panther, his face hidden by long dark hair. Steve’s first thought is operative. It’s in the roll of his shoulders as he walks, the black combat pants tightening over muscular thighs, the empty holsters strapped over his body. The man is all black in the white room and it’s shocking. His hands are tight fists, opening for a second before curling up again like paper in a fire. One arm is shining metal. He turns with his back to them and paces the other way.
Steve’s second thought is that this man is not just angry at having been caught. There is a jagged discomfort to him, like the different parts of his body don’t belong to him and he has to fight to keep them working together. It’s like he’s at war with his own brain. It doesn’t make sense, but after thinking dangerous and angry, Steve thinks hurt, and that word sticks to him in a way he doesn’t like.
The Alpha part of him yearns. Omega.
