For a long time, the 141 has been exclusively birds.
This isn’t by design; a lot of those that choose to go spec ops are birds, or particularly well-suited breeds of dogs and cats, the occasional mustelid and, for one particular mission where they’d had to house a foreign unit, a very inconvenient bull. Usually, though, it’s animals that are good in small groups as well as large ones, groups that can form flocks and packs and colonies, respectively.
They are a flock, mismatched and odd though they are, and Ghost has always assumed that, should they welcome a fourth into their unit, for a trial run or otherwise, their prime candidates would be other birds.

After a mission gone sideways, Ghost isn't the only one who has to deal with the aftermath and everything that comes with it.–––

Summary
There’s a teddy in Soap’s bed; a beaten-up, old brown bear. Well-loved, if the state of the fur is any indication. Ghost lets out a choked laugh, mostly at his own expense. He wishes he was there, suddenly, wishes he was by Johnny’s side as he walked through the doorway and realised that his childhood room was waiting for him like a time capsule. Wishes he got to see the embarrassed scrunch of his face, the way the tips of his ears would flush red.
Soap has a whole second life, outside of the SAS. He’s got a mother, and a poorly-decorated bedroom, and a bear. All Ghost has is a flat that will be the same it is today as it will be the day he dies, like he was never even here at all.

Simon’s hand returned, this time pressing softly into the side of Johnny’s cheek, and he leaned into the touch.

Yuri dropped to his knees and drew his shoulders up to his ears, curling his body into a tight ball to protect his most fragile parts. He heard the snow crunch under the bear’s lumbering steps as it drew closer, but he was too frightened to look.
“Please, don’t- don’t eat me.”
The moment seemed to drag on forever. Yuri felt the bear’s heavy gaze on him, heard the rumbling grunt it let out as it poked at Yuri’s spine with its snout, its looming presence daunting.
“Stay away, little hunter. Your kind is not welcome here.”
Or: Yuri is a hunter living in a small village somewhere in the Urals. Otabek is a shapeshifter who can assume the form of a large bear. A chance meeting during one of Yuri's hunting trips changes their lives forever.
