This didn’t mean that the bad days were gone, but now he felt capable in taking care of himself. But happiness never lasts. Well, that’s Buck’s experience anyways.

“Woah, hey, what’s wrong?” Eddie asks. He straightens up, only for Buck to sink to the ground — his knees too wobbly to keep him upright for a moment longer.
“I can’t be him again,” Buck says, breathlessly. “I can’t be Derrek.”
OR: Buck and Eddie are trapped in an elevator. This brings up some things for Buck.

After a lie creates distance between them, Buck does his best to hold the middle ground, until a medical emergency reminds them all how fragile everything really is.

“What?!” Eddie barks, half-amused, half-exasperated. “Buck, it’s fine. We’re fine. Nothing happened, and even if it did, who cares? All three of them had it coming.”
“Of course they did!” Buck whirls back around, jaw set, eyes burning. “Those kinds of guys will always have it coming, Eddie, but you have to think! There were three of them, and only two of us, and we are 800 miles from home with no cell service and no backup!”
Eddie, infuriatingly, just shrugs. “So what? I could’ve taken them.”
“Hand-to-hand? Yeah, maybe. But what if one of them had a knife? Or a gun?”
“It wouldn’t matter.”
“It wouldn’t ma—” Buck blinks, once, then twice. “It wouldn’t matter?”
or: a Mother’s Boy rewrite. The car breaks down, so Buck and Eddie have to spend the night in the motel. There’s only one bed. Buck has a lot of questions. Sappy smut ensues.

That’s all?, Buck wants to scream, because every relationship he has is tied to the job in some way, and first Maddie left, and then it was Chimney, and now it’s Eddie. But he doesn’t scream, because that would be a little bit too tragic, even for him, and nods instead. Bites his tongue. Pretends that he isn't falling apart where he's stood.
