Excellent reading for anyone who likes 1) the ASOIAF universe, 2) well-fleshed out political intrigue in a lived-in and grounded portrayal of the setting, and 3) a gripping protagonist who has both impressive talents and genuine flaws that are simultaneously brought to the surface for the reader without compromising believability or the momentum of the plot. Alyssa is truly a great OC. She feels true to the ASOIAF world but shakes it up by her presence, which gives the story bite and panache. Overall, this fic expertly walks the balance of verisimilitude and fidelity to the original work with an engaging novelty that makes it stand out among others I have tried.

A friend introduced me to this and I'm really glad she did because I had a great time with this. The Fire Nation getting a recovery narrative to match Zuko's own is a heartening prospect, lingering nationalist prejudices notwithstanding, and the author did so well balancing both those things and more in the narrative. Katara leads positive social change the way I wished she had done / been doing in TLOK's canon.

Summary
Peridot and Jasper are both recovering from their relationships with Lapis Lazuli and end up supporting each other when they try living together in Peridot's new home, the lighthouse above the Temple.
Here is the theme song of this fic.
In terms of time setting, I started this a week after the "App Bomb" running from "Dewey Wins" to "Kevin Party" and it builds on Lapis' abandonment of Peridot in that sequence of episodes but it is set at a vague near-future point in which Jasper has recovered from her corruption, at least insofar as she is bipedal and verbal again but she's still processing a lot of feelings about her experiences. I am leaving precisely how that happened vague but it was probably broadly similar to my earlier story "Back to Beta."

When I feel like I need cheering up, this helps brighten my day. Thought-provoking, funny, heartfelt. Every character beat gets the right amount of room to breathe. The author walked that balance with so much skill that I went right past the point of envy and just circled back to mute and joyous immersion. Nor have I ever looked at Jasper as a character the same way again (Peridot, I was already fond of).
