    Summary

So: Lorenz’s home. Claude has seen the courtyard and the stables and the countless horses. He has noticed the respectful deference of the soldiers toward Lorenz, the fond politeness of the servants. The elderly woman who must be the housekeeper fusses when she realizes Lorenz was injured recently. After hours on a horse, there is no way for him to deny that he is hurting, which leads to the housekeeper to send for the keep’s physician.
This is how Claude finds himself in Lorenz’s room.

“This isn’t really about tea, is it?” Claude blurts, desperate as his resolve crumbles.

“I am glad you noticed.” It’s perhaps the first forthright thing Lorenz has said this whole time. “No, it is not.”

    Summary

Claude looks back the way they’d come, then at Lorenz again, and tips his head back in despair. “You breathed it in, didn’t you.”

“I take it this is poisonous.” Lorenz feels…well enough, mostly. His heart is beating faster, though that could just be apprehension; the air seems warmer than it had before. The scent of cloves is already fading. “Lethal?”

Claude actually laughs, though without much amusement. “No. It’s, uh, it’s called…a bunch of things. Rose of Bassarid?”

Lorenz shakes his head. It is more than just apprehension driving his pulse now, sending a feverish tingling through his veins. Of all horrible times—it must be the fear of whatever is to come that has his attention lingering on the column of Claude’s throat, half-hidden by his collar and a carelessly-tied neckcloth. He disciplines his attention, ruthlessly. This is not lethal, therefore he will endure it; since it is not lethal, he has no need for any final—whimsy.

    Summary

For a brief moment, Lorenz imagines Claude gone — from the chair, from the world — and strangely, he misses him. He’s standing right next to Claude and yet he misses him dearly.

“I wouldn’t get used to it if I were you,” Lorenz says.

    “And why is that?”

Because — oh, Lorenz could write an essay on the topic: How Claude von Riegan Manages to Exist Between Loathing and Respect. Lorenz could write a novel. A collection of scattered poems about resentment and a blustering heat that isn’t entirely disgust. When Lorenz thinks of Claude, he thinks of frustration. Not red-hot hatred but something softer, smoother. A color that does not — should not — exist upon the spectrum.

    Summary

After years of bitter war between the Adrestian Empire and the Holy Kingdom of Faerghus, General Felix Hugo Fraldarius, also known as the Winter Wolf, is captured and maimed. Instead of executing Felix or holding him for ransom, the Emperor instead offers him up to the son of the Prime Minister; an insult and an order rolled into one. What else can Ferdinand do but accept his liege's generous demand?

A story in which Felix determines to kill everyone involved, Ferdinand strives to survive, Ludwig can never be pleased, Edelgard and Hubert act as villains, and Linhardt, well, he just wants this all to be a bad dream.
