Summary
They worked on the boat; they played on the boat. They were too old for pretend but sometimes they did it anyway, pretending to set sail, fight pirates, find treasure, discover lost worlds. Eventually, Ford got sidetracked watching crabs. He found a crab exoskeleton and played with the legs, studying the way the joints articulated. When he turned back to Stan to share his observations, Stan was sitting, sad faced, staring out at the sea. Ford was disturbed to see his brother so melancholy.
Or, an exploration how Stan slowly loses the faith and love of his family.

Ford goes entirely still, turning his head towards Stan and staring at him with wide eyes.
His brother remains in the same position, as if he never spoke at all, and his eyes do not give away even an ounce of his emotion.
Stan takes a deep breath and Ford begins holding his.“Or did I finally prove my worth to you?”
(or: Stan is a hero. He wonders if that's the only reason Ford suddenly wants to be his brother again.)

“Ugh,” Kakashi sighs loud before turning quick and sharp in Guy’s grasp so they face each other, only to absolutely slam his face against Guy’s chest. If Guy were a lesser man it might hurt, but as is, he just laughs at his Rival’s antics, even as said rival curls his fist tight on Guy’s bare waist, “I’m trying to sleep, be quiet.”
“But Kakashi,” Guy actually whispers this time, jaw moving against the top of Kakashi’s head, “You are in my bed.”
Or, 5 times Kakashi fell asleep on Guy and one time Guy understood.

“You would’ve been fine.”
Gai’s voice chimed against the blank walls, flat and gentle in an artificial way that wasn’t his own. Kakashi met his eyes at the sound, faced with something akin to both grief and sympathy on a face that normally shone bright.
“Hm?”
“If I died. You would’ve gotten on with it. You’re strong, Kakashi.”
“No. I don’t think I’ll ever be strong enough to handle something like that.”
Or: There's a lot that Kakashi wants to say to his eternal rival after the war, even if Gai maybe doesn't want to hear it.

Obito was the first person to ask. It was a joke, of course, a mockery that Kakashi took lightly. Then, over the years, as Gai's display of affection got more and more grand, more people asked him variations of the same question.
What's up with you and that kid? Why don't you just accept his ridiculous proposal?
They don't understand. They don't know that between Kakashi and Gai, Gai will always be the better half.

Kakashi casts his eyes around for the discarded med-pack and heads towards it. His knees crunch over the shattered anaesthetic. On second thought, he grabs a large shard of glass and tries to hack through the bindings. It’s not the most effective blade but the rope starts to split just as another exploding tag detonates outside - it sounds further away this time, and Kakashi jerks his head up as Obito tumbles into the cave.
“Bak - holy crap.”
Kakashi can’t help but roll his eyes.

Summary
“Says fourth.” Kakashi retorts, before moving towards him. He grabs Obito’s arm and yanks him suddenly out of the forest, ignoring his squawk of protest.
“Let go of me, Bakashi-”
“Shut up.” Kakashi snaps, something odd in his tone that actually quiets Obito down out of surprise alone. They’ve had their back and forth going for years now, to the point where he knows the rest of their old classmates are pretty sure its a language of their own. Despite his verbal disagreements, he’s not entirely convinced they’re wrong when moments like these arise.
Kakashi lets go of him suddenly, but Obito’s no green genin that falls over at the sudden action. He takes a few steps away, stabilizing himself. They’re back near the shore, by the lake Obito had oh-so-satisfyingly dumped Kakashi into hours prior.
“Fight me.” Kakashi says, his voice solid and serious. Not super serious, but it's a far cry from the sudden light-hearted mood.
It might say something about their relationship that Obito doesn’t even hesitate. It’s not that he’s ready to fight the Hatake at any given opportunity, it’s just-
