When he peers up at Felix, haloed in the setting afternoon sun streaming in through the library windows, he sees, for just a second, a fur-trimmed blue coat with a high collar caressing the curve of Felix’s neck. He blinks, and the image melts back to Felix as he normally is, staring at Sylvain with a sweatshirt on and a stricken look on his face.

Summary
Despite the decades behind them, it astounds him that he is allowed to do this. It has been thirty years since he first kissed Felix: then, on the battlefield, amidst corpses and demonic beasts, the two of them darkened with grime and blood. Their bodies were young, ardent, possessed with a longing neither of them quite knew what to do with.
Now desire comes to them more slowly. Dimitri has learned patience. He knows Felix’s body so intimately it might well be his own. He knows that the backs of Felix’s arms are unbearably sensitive, and that a kiss lain at the base of his vulnerable neck will leave him panting with desire. He knows that his left hip aches when it thunders. He knows how Felix falls asleep, and how he comes awake. He knows how he looks in the throes of pleasure, when the world falls away from their fingertips and there is nothing left in the world than this chamber, this bed, this moment, this us.
Thirty years into the future.

Words have never been Felix’s strong suit. But Sylvain has always been the one person Felix never had to censor himself around. When they’re together—riding along a trail through the countryside, sitting by a campfire and trading tales of their latest adventures, wrapped in each other’s arms just before the break of dawn—words flow as freely as clear water through a stream, unimpeded by the weighty expectations so many people in Felix’s life have placed upon him.
But letter writing is different.
With letters, there’s no voice to gauge tone with, no hint of a smile or soulful laugh to show emotion. There’s no body language to observe, no eye contact to be had, no freckled face for Felix to read like an open book whose pages he’s studied with all the devotion and reverence of a monk reading holy scripture.
Felix drops his head into his hands as the seconds tick by into minutes. He’s written plenty of letters. So why can’t he bring himself to write to Sylvain when it matters most?
Taking a deep breath, Felix raises a shaky hand to pen his first line.
I am writing to ask you for your hand in marriage.

Some of them kept their eyes downcast, fixed on the rough planks of the deck. Others peeked up warily at him and his crew, as if their peaceful attitude might shift in an instant. Other still glared openly at Sylvain, like their look might make him keel over where he stood.
One such pair of eyes was a beautiful amber, set in a slender face of creamy pale skin, stark in contrast to the long, inky blue-black hair that was gathered up in a loose knot at the top of the man’s head. He was, perhaps, just a couple years younger than Sylvain, in his early twenties. His thin pink lips were pressed into a hard line, all contempt and disdain. A pretty little thing.
And achingly familiar.
Of course, Sylvain knew when he gave the order to attack The Aegis that she was a Fraldarius ship. But he hadn’t expected to actually find a Fraldarius aboard. It had been years; Sylvain couldn’t have been more than ten the last time he saw the little Fraldarius boy, but there was no doubt in his mind that the whiny, crying child he’d known for a single summer in his youth was now the scowling man being held at sword point while Sylvain robbed his father’s ship.
Sylvain made a rash decision.

Felix had argued vehemently, while Ingrid ripped the room apart to find clothing for them to wear and Sylvain listened at the cracked door to the soldiers downstairs informing the unimpressed brothel owner that they were conducting a routine search for spies from the Kingdom and would need access to all customer rooms, that there was no good reason he had to wear the costume and Sylvain got to keep (most of) his own clothes on.
Sylvain had—heroically, he thinks—refrained from saying either “You’re prettier” or “You’re so much smaller,” both of which are absolutely true and either of which would have earned him at least a minor stabbing.

The web page in front of them is simple; the words SAFE OR SCAM? head the page in bright, lime green; to the right is a photo of Headmaster Rhea with slits for pupils and long, long fangs. A counter underneath the header informs them they’re the 13,159th visitor.
“This is nonsense.” Lysithea moves to return to the search results page but Annette’s quicker.
“No!” she shouts. Her hand covers Lysithea’s and jerks the mouse far, far away from the back button. “I mean — don’t you think you should cover your bases? It’s always good to look at alternative perspectives so you can learn the most, and isn’t that what the internet’s all about?”
