Perhaps, when Keith first found out he would be taking Shiro's place as the pilot of the Kerberos Mission, he should have known something would go wrong. They always did when good things happened.
Perhaps, when the people closest to Katie were the farthest from her they'd ever been, she should have guessed it wasn't quite as perfect as it seemed. She'd become quite adept at detecting flaws, anomalies, and all manner of bugs.
When Shiro broke the good news to Keith, it seemed as if things were finally looking up for the kid. And for a while, that was true. But he couldn't have known what would happen on that ill-fated mission. He couldn't have prepared the mission crew for it, or made some far-fetched attempt to shield them from it. The reality of it will haunt him, regardless.
Post-Landing explosion. Yeah right.

Summary
With Lotor's recent separation from the empire, the Galra Empire is beginning to show cracks. As the effects shake down and infighting begins, the battlefield becomes more dangerous. A Coalition meeting is held to evaluate the situation, and Kolivan's arrival brings with him news of Krolia's death. The loss is crushing to Keith, and Katie wishes she could shield him from the pain like she does for Voltron, but war waits for no one.

A Kidge AU of mine in which Keith has an eyepatch, and the war against the Galran Empire stretches across several years (10, give or take) because a 10,000 year old intergalactic empire shouldn't go down in what amounts to two.
The Rebels and the Blade are more involved, Lotor is like five different thorns in the side at any given time, plus one in the back where you can't quite reach. Zarkon and Haggar are a Problem with a capital P, and the Empire's Officers like Sendak and Co. are all listed under Major Concern.
The initial fic is The Scars Say I Love you and I'll be adding in some shorts focused on events that expand the universe and separate it from canon n' stuff.
