It was the way of things, you supposed. You weren’t the one Captain America was supposed to end up with. In the stories and history books, he ended up with someone as shining as him, someone glaringly beautiful and strong, someone who could stand next to him and about whom people could say, “That makes sense.” He was Steve Rogers and he could’ve had anyone he wanted.

Her life changed that day in 2012 when the god of mischief walked past her station aboard the helicarrier. The consequence of that day - reassignment. That substation in the subarctic where the Capsicle was housed for a period of time. With the news of Loki's death, she fell into the waiting game: waiting for TPTB to decide that she'd learned her lesson, waiting to be brought home again, waiting to see which of the station's three inhabitants would crack up first.
When Loki appeared, striding towards her down one of the substation's hallways she thought she knew the answer. Turns out she didn't know as much as she thought about the two men she'd been protecting, the station she'd been guarding, or the god everyone always told her trust as far as she could throw.
Just like before, Loki left our agent to the consequences of her choices. In a post HYDRA world SHIELD needed all hands, so she was brought home again - only to be settled with a station but never a task. But the devil finds work for idle hands, as the saying goes. Seeking out everything alien, every bit of information potentially linked to something Asgardian, has a consequence.

"Whoa, no need to snap your cap! I'm just lookin' to see if you're all right. Do ya need a doctor, poppa?" The voice was definitely one of a female, Steve could tell, and that was interesting enough to pry his eyes open for.
He looked up, and the sincerity of those dark brown eyes would have taken his breath away if his asthma attack wasn't doing it already.

When HYDRA couldn't duplicate the serum that was used to create a super-soldier, they decided to breed one.
The Winter-Soldier Program went down as one of their biggest failures.
Bucky has been freed from HYDRA, but with only tattered memories of the past, it will be a race against the clock to stop HYDRA from succeeding this time.
That sounded way less dramatic in my head...

Bucky watched them in silence. They were going to take it all away and he couldn’t do anything to stop it. His eyes dimmed as they prepped him on the chair. This would be easier and less painful if you stop struggling, soldier, they told him. He laughed and laughed until his stomach hurt, until one of them smacked him in the face and told him to shut up. What do you know about pain, he spat at them, the metal plates on his arm shifted as he tried to twist himself free.

Steve taught her the lesson the first time they met.
“You know, I can’t imagine it. Being an Avenger.” Annie confessed. She speared a piece of pineapple on her long-stemmed fork and dragged it lazily through the chocolate. “I mean, how do you do it?”
Steve shrugged. “Its not as hard as you’d think.” He said. “It’s a lot like being a soldier.”
Annie shook her head. “No, I don’t mean-“ she hesitated, “I don’t mean the fighting. I understand that. What I don’t get is how you know.” She said pointedly, looking sincerely baffled. “The Avengers… you, how do you know which calls to make? From the stories I’ve heard from Ms Potts…” she stopped again, a slight frown creasing her brow. “I just don’t know if I would be able to know what the right decision was, in the moment, you know?”
“It’s-“ Steve tried to hunt for the right words. “Like I said. Its easier than you think.” Annie raised an eyebrow and he leaned forward. “No, really. The way I see it, in the moment you find the guy tryin’ to hurt people and… and you just have to ask yourself one thing. What does this guy want to do? You ask that and then you do your best to get in the goddamned way.”
She takes it to heart.
