Verso Dessendre never died. He worked with the Writers, specifically with his lover Noah, to fake his own death in a fire, never suspecting that his little sister would get caught in it, or that his family would by destroyed by the aftermath.
But the Dessendre family are not the only ones suffering the consequences of that disastrous plan when Alicia getting stuck in Verso's childhood canvas and an entirely different life leads to Noah getting stuck there as well.
Now Noah is back, bringing with him the memories of dying in a world that no longer exists and an entire lifetime in which Verso meant nothing to him. Meanwhile, Alicia struggles with adjusting back to a life she no longer wants and still doesn't know that Verso is alive - as is Gustave, in a way.But those turn out to be the least of their problems as the conflict between the Writers and the Painters takes a turn for the worse and either side expresses their displeasure with the events that lead to that escalation, and the people responsible for them.

His miraculous survival means nothing if he can't get back to Maelle and the others before he gommages. With too many questions and too few answers, Gustave must navigate the Continent alone while fighting his own demons. He has to find Maelle, whatever the cost. But doubt and despair are difficult foes to fight when there's no one by your side.
