Mel King was a creature of habit.
There was a specific sort of choreography to her life beyond the chaos of the Emergency Department. A carefully controlled routine, a color-coded calendar, a rigid set of rituals that kept her grounded enough to keep showing up day after day, to keep on doing the work that was required of her to save lives.
Everything was going fine for Mel. Her personal life was predictable, unexciting, and perfectly fulfilling, thank you very much.

And yeah, maybe the ring on his finger sort of burned when he looked at her sometimes, even though it was just for show, now.
It was just easier to let her keep thinking he was still married to Abby. Safer.
It raised less eyebrows about the nature of their friendship when the ring stayed on while he was at work, the weight on his finger reminding him not to say or do anything stupid.
It also made it a little less creepy when the pet names started slipping out.

At this, Frank’s frown deepens before widening into a frustrated half smile. “Uh, yes we are? We’ve been dating for nine months?”

However, one night, you show up on the doorstep of his room at the raggedy motel he'd hidden away in to recuperate after the events with Glenn Arias.
On one hand, he doesn't trust you at all. On the other hand, you were bruised, and bloodied, and looking like you were on the verge of death.
Somehow, you soon have Leon wrapped up in your ploy to take down the company that bound your life in a contract. As the two of you stay trapped together working as unfortunate allies, conflicting feelings arise and threaten to turn your world upside down.

“The thing you said, at the Russian base.” He explains, his cheeks turning a little bit pink.
“Oh yeah,” you remember, “That.”
Steve searches your face for a second, and then swallows thickly, as if reaching a decision. He still holds your hand, his palm warm against yours.
“You know, in case something crazy and bad does happen again, I could, uh, I mean we could,” he clears his throat, “You know, we could make sure.”
“Make sure…?” You ask, wanting to be absolutely sure you were understanding him correctly.
“You don’t die a virgin.” He fills in quickly, the words rushing out of his mouth.
