"Well, he was listening, but it was helpful! It— it exploded! And I don't know if it was chaos energy or if I did something, but— but—"
"Something exploded?" Tom echoes incredulously.
"Is anyone hurt?" Maddie interjects, "Where's Knuckles?"
Tails shifts the bundle. Laying there, small, miserable-looking, and quite frankly adorable, is Knuckles.

If it hadn't been a full day, and if it hadn't started with Knuckles getting blasted, Sonic would almost think he was just meditating. The echidna sits with folded legs, eyes closed, chest rising and falling. It doesn't look like anything is wrong.
Sonic folds his arms. Looks can be deceiving.
"So?" Voice soft, Tails watches over the so-called-Oracle's shoulder. Green magic twines around the alligator's hand, twisting between Knuckles' quills. "Do you know what's wrong?"
"He is trapped within his troubled mind," the Oracle breathes. His hands retreat back into his cloak. His glowing eyes pierce through the shadow of his hood. "You must enter his memories and discover that which he is locked within."
"We have to go into Knuckles' brain?" Sonic gasps, leaning forward. "How?!"
"I will send you."

“So, what’s going on, lil’ bro? Do you wanna talk about it?” Sonic asked kindly, his expression soft. He knew from experience that Tails might not be ready to open up yet. While the blue hedgehog suspected the kit’s tears were tied to his past, it could just as easily be about something else entirely.
“It’s just…” His younger brother clenched his fists, his twin tails curling slightly as his emotions spilled over. “I’m always screwing things up!” he burst out, his words trembling. “Back in Siberia, my tablet didn’t translate things properly, and we could’ve been dead! And Dad disguising himself as Commander Walters? That almost got him killed—because of my tech!” His voice wavered with raw guilt as he rambled, letting out everything he’d been holding inside.
“And I couldn’t even save you.” The young fox continued, as tears threatened to leave the kid’s baby blue eyes. “Knuckles had to. I’m such a screw-up, and I’m tired of it! I don’t think I deserve to be part of the team anymore…” His voice cracked on the last part, and he sniffled, unable to meet his older brother’s eyes.
Or: Tails gets into a guilt and self-hatred spiral, and Sonic helps him get out of it.
