Summary
Melanie is grateful to Jon three times.
The first, for coming back at all. Not that she missed him, not that she’s glad he’s not dead. But the last few months in the Institute have felt hollow and it’s a sickening relief to have a target for her anger again.
The second, for asking to remove the bullet, and allowing her to refuse. This is a more complicated gratitude, because she doesn’t want it. But she can’t bring herself to wish he’d kept this meagre measure of control, of choice, from her. So she is grateful, and she hates it.
The third, for being the obvious monster everyone has their eye on, so they never think to ask about the blood under her nail, don’t wonder when she slips out the door of the archives with a knife in hand. Maybe she should feel guiltier for letting Jon take the fall, knowing full well that everyone involved in their little intervention has at least as much blood on their hands. But she still hates him just enough to be able to swallow down the guilt, so she lets Basira threaten him and swears that she won’t let any of her victims make it back to the Institute with their stories.

Summary
Jon sighs. “Martin, look, I’m not… I’m not poking fun, or god forbid angry at you. I just… Going into… whatever I’m about to go into, not knowing if I’ll make it back, I just… After so long scorning you, distrusting you, and you still caring? I just worry that I somehow managed to… fool you.”
Martin scoffs. “You haven’t fooled me, Jon. Not even a little bit. That’s exactly the thing.” He exhales. “I guess… I’ve been able to spot your attempts to fool everyone with the ‘disinterested academic’ schtick and it just… didn’t work on me. Through all the tired bullshit I saw… I saw you.”
The night before Jon leaves for The Unknowing, Martin stops by his office for a few last words of encouragement. One more cup of tea. But their interaction unfolds into something far, far different.

“Well you look…”
“Kind of dreadful?”
“A little bit”
“I had an inkling, I might”
Jon’s lips barely move as speaks, and he coughs again.
“Are you…?”, Martin starts again, but Jon merely looks up at him, blinking with heavy lids and he closes his mouth.
“You have to narrow that down a bit, I’m afraid”
Even before Jon has finished his sentence, both of them go still.

Summary
In 2019, Georgie Barker needs a new start. After a tragic event sours her creative output, she finds herself in possession of Magnus Hall, a country home from a relative she never knew. All she wants is a break from ghosts and ghouls; What she gets instead is a local legend, a haunting mystery and an ally in Melanie King, looking for a way to restart her YouTube series after the internal collapse of her show.
In 1949, Martin Blackwood needs a new start. After his last job went sour, he finds himself newly employed by the mysterious owner of Magnus Hall, Jonathan Sims. All he wants is a job that will pay him enough to take care of his mother and not look too closely at his qualifications; what he gets instead is a generational power struggle, the flagging efforts of his new boss to gain the upper hand, and maybe a chance at love along the way.
With supernatural events escalating for Melanie and Georgie, they find themselves needing to ask two simple questions; one, who or what is haunting Magnus Hall?
Two: How do they stop it from killing again?

Summary
The harmless crush hadn’t taken Martin by surprise. At all. He knows his own weaknesses, and the day he’d first set eyes on Jon, he’d seen every last one of them glaring back at him. But as he steps into the pub on the unremarkable Thursday night on which he will fall in love, he’s thinking about fate.
Jon, on the other hand, is thinking about how soon he can reasonably leave the pub.
The next four years? An exercise in bad timing.

Summary
Melanie’s face crumples a bit, which she does her best to quickly smooth away, not quite succeeding. Georgie’s hands burn with the need to touch her, pull her close and hold her, her chest aching with the desire to try and make all this just go away, make it less complicated, make it easy and simple for her, muscle the world into something soft and yielding, something kind. She’s had to fight and claw for so terribly long. Melanie deserves gentle.
“Okay,” Melanie says, then takes a deep breath through her nose, holds, out through her mouth, something that Georgie finds herself unconsciously matching, since they’ve practiced together so often now. “Okay.” It feels so natural when she follows it up with a soft, “Georgie, can I kiss you?”

Summary
The visions had started small- a flash of Tim, not as Jon knew him, but with pockmarked scars marring his skin. A moment of an unusual feeling of fondness towards Sasha that didn't feel like Jon himself, but someone else's left over affection. It hadn't taken him long to realize his knowledge was... bleeding over, in unexpected ways. He adjusts his actions accordingly.
His archival assistants just want to know what the hell is going on.

“Are you glad we never left?” Martin asks.
Jon looks at him. His freckles. His teeth. His nose. The tears escaping his eyes, not because he’s sad but rather because gravity is pulling them out of his tear ducts forcibly. He looks so sweet and Jon feels like a monster for keeping him all to himself, suddenly. The whole world deserves to bask in the warm, sweet glow of his kindness. How he’d forgiven Jon. How he’s here, and warm, and present, and real.
“Yes,” Jon says, and he doesn’t think he’s let any emotion creep into his voice. “I’m glad to be here with you.”

Summary
“I will give you a choice, Martin,” Helen offered, cocking her head to one side. Her undulating off-brown hair fell with her head just a second too late. “You may return to the past and try your hardest to prevent Jonah from getting his way alone, or you may bring the Archivist. What do you pick?”
Helen offers Martin a chance to go back in time and prevent Jonah's final ritual.
