    Summary

There's a new member in the circus. Everyone was so caught up in rebuilding after Jax's abstraction and Caine's return that the concept of a new person joining the circus seemed to escape their minds.

Luna's last memories are of what she can only describe as her own traumatic death. Unlike the other members of the circus she doesn't remember putting on a headset, she remembers being held under water until she can't breath and what's the last thing she sees before she looses consciousness? The moon. So when she wakes up in a world where everything is way too brightly colored, the laws of physics are blatantly ignored, and she can't even remember her own name that she would choose to name herself after the last thing she saw.

As Luna explores the circus she learns more about how exactly she ended up there, what exactly it means to abstract, why the moon has taken such an interest in her and seems to know everything about her, but most importantly, she will learn if she truly is dead.

    Summary

To abstract, you have to completely surrender. To de-abstract, you need to completely want to live again and believe in yourself. Ribbit de-abstracts because they don't want to be alone. Jax de-abstracts out of spite.

Also: they all go to space?

    Summary

Jax wakes up after a long, long time, a bit the worse for wear.

On the one hand, she experienced ego death, is tired and hurting all the time, and cries like a faucet now.

On the other, she's too exhausted to bother with her old bluster, has accepted that she wasn't subtle at all about her gender woes, and is genuinely galaxies happier than she used to be.

But even so...an old question begins to nag at her.

"Have you...ever done something you regret?"

    Summary

Harper Mateo has always had trouble connecting with others—even her own family.

No matter where she goes, she feels like she doesn’t quite belong. Even at home, talking with her parents, Leroy and Abigail Mateo, leaves her feeling disconnected—like she never had the internet connection needed to play the game of life.

What bothers her most is her relationship with her parents. She wants an inside joke, a corny family story, a fake tradition—anything.

Ironically, her parents set up that goal themselves.
Whenever they tell the story of a strange coincidence from before they knew each other, they always end it the same way:

    “What a small world.”

They seemed closer than ever. It became more than a funny coincidence to her—it became proof that they shared something she didn’t.

So if a strange headset was what connected her parents, maybe it could connect her to them too.

This totally won’t backfire and trap her in a place where even the impossible feels normal. And her habit of treating everyone like a person will totally not change the code of those who were never meant to be one.

    Summary

    Abstraction is permanent.

    That doesn't mean unchanging.

Or: Returning to a life you thought you left behind forever, what happens when your survival depends on your mental stability and one very determined jester, and does gender even matter when you're not a real person?
