The story came to me, when I thought about, how Theon would be coping with the happenings of season 3, how it would continue. And what if Robb survived but didn't save Theon. If those two met again on eyelevel.
I didn't want broken, haunted Theon, I wanted angry, resentful Theon. And I didn't want forgiving Robb either. Theon's plenty haunted as it is, but he's dealing with it. And Robb has to deal with having completely lost control of his surroundings.

Theon shivers, resisting the urge to turn to his side, to look at the void where the sorceress sees a shadow.
“His hand is resting on your shoulder,” she presses, “can’t you feel the weight?”
He can, he’s felt it for years now, has felt it since he’d first set foot in the Northern lands. It had left him in the darkest time, he’d chased it away, when remembering it might have caused him as much pain as remembering his own name. But the shadow came back when he’d reclaimed his name.
“It’s been a long time,” Theon mumbles, careful not to open his mouth too much as he speaks. “Long gone.”
“Just because we have lost, it does not mean we are able to let go.”

Then again, no one knew much about Kaz Brekker. They didn’t know he wasn’t from the Barrel or that he’d once had a family. They never guessed where the rasp in his young voice came from. They certainly didn’t know why he really wore gloves. Most weren’t even convinced he was human. No one ever suspected that Kaz Brekker was deaf.

Why she insisted on the window he didn’t know, but for him, it became her door, he kept it open even when he knew she was gone, even in the winter months when he shivered. He kept it open in case she came home. She sidled up to him, standing before the desk and peering at him, her expression unreadable. She jerked her chin at the wound and rag.
“That’s new.”
“Thanks for noticing.”

He was used to it, used to saving his own skin, refusing the aid offered, but when he starts bleeding out in the Crow Club, a recently returned Inej notices.
