Summary
It was supposed to be a joke, okay? It was supposed to be funny, and they were all supposed to get a laugh out of it. Despite all of his protests, Hayden had thought he could get Shane to see the humor in it once he gave in. Except the longer Shane decidedly didn’t find it funny, the less entertaining it became for Hayden as well.
Hayden hadn’t ever actually done a deep-dive into the whole Hollanov internet obsession. He wasn’t prepared to have the cornerstone of his worldview be destroyed by a youtube compilation video.

“I mean it,” Ilya said, ducking his head to try to catch his eye. “You’re the most specific person I’ve ever met. It’s fascinating. I love the way your brain works. And the way this house feels like you.”

His mom fills him in, standing with hunched shoulders in a cramped, too-bright hallway at The Ottawa Hospital. An illegal check into the boards; they were worried about a head injury, because Ilya wasn’t moving and he’s usually so, so hard to take down like that. But then his heart stopped, and they had to CPR right there on the ice to bring it back. To bring him back.
Shane buckles, crouching against the wall with his head in his hands. His mom’s voice is fuzzy above him, her hair tickling his shoulder when she leans down to comfort him. Ilya’s heart fucking stopped. On the ice, in the middle of a game, he died.
Or: Ilya goes into a coma after an accident on the ice. Shane figures out how to build him a life worth waking up for.

It probably makes him a bad person, but in a very weirdly literal way, Shane is aware he is living every one of his childhood dreams. He realizes that 15 year old shane needn’t have agonized over whether he wanted pro-athlete muscles or to be fucked by someone with pro-athlete muscles. It's heady and intense, but Shane suddenly knows with total certainty and confidence that he has both.
He is a hometown hero because he plays pro hockey. He is one of, if not the best at it, and the only other person in the ‘greatest of all time’ conversation is underneath him. He knows without doubt that Ilya is going to be a hero in Ottawa because he is an amazing player, but an even better leader, and he is in Ottawa for Shane. Ilya will be incredible on the ice, and he will build an amazing team, but he will come home to Shane.
Shane is so absorbed in the feeling of Ilya inside him, the revelation that all his dreams are coming true, and the blissed out borderline painful look on Ilya’s face that he doesn’t realize he is crying until Ilya’s thumb brushes a tear away. “My pretty little slut crying on my cock - is everything you wanted?”
