Intel has informed him that the Brothers aided and abetted the bombing of Resembool’s train station, leaving many civilians dead. He finds them. But they aren't anything like he expected.

Red had a significant color to Meryl growing up. Red meant red envelopes on birthdays filled with double dollars to spend on candies and sweets. Red meant red lanterns lining the roads for weeks leading up to New Year's in her hometown. Red meant red firecrackers booming through the street all night. Red was the rogue of her mother’s lips, her father’s suit tie.
Now when she thought of red, all she saw was Vash.

Summary
“I don’t know why I agreed to this,” Vash says, keeping as close to Wolfwood as he dares while the other man cuts a path for them almost directly through the middle of the town square. His hands are one nervous twitch away from latching onto one of the thick leather straps that Wolfwood’s large cross is kept wrapped with. “I should’ve kept running.”
His grumbling falls flat, and Wolfwood snorts. They both know Vash couldn’t have gone on running. There was nowhere for him to go.
Vash had no plan when he ran from July. No plan for where to go next, or what to do. There had been only a single thought in his head.
This isn’t home anymore.
Away from his brother, Vash isn't doing very well at adapting.

Vash wishes that he could say this position was unusual - strung up and upside down in the wake of even more two-bit bandits who apparently didn't even have the wherewithal to know who he was. That would be disingenuous, and outright lying-and being that there was no one to lie to, it really seemed like wasted energy. So, he's tied up, with nothing but the two suns and the two corpses swinging idly at his side.
Oh well. He's been through worse.

Summary
Wolfwood doesn’t know what to expect when he signs the contract and is sent out to retrieve the brother of the Angel that the Eye of Michael obeys.
If anything, he expects a creature so obviously otherworldly, that there would be no mistaking him as anything but a being meant for worship. He expects a thousand wings, a thousand eyes, something with skin glowing too bright for mere mortals to stand in the presence of.
Either that, or something the complete opposite. A normal human being, who just so happens to be the brother of someone who gets his kicks out of starting society-ruling cults and creating child soldiers.
Wolfwood can't decide which would be worse.
Vash wasn't made for cruelty. When Knives starts pushing too hard again, one day he runs.
