Before Mars could explain anything, Venus interrupted him and pushed him to the side. He grinned at Pluto.

Proteus cringed again, his expression changing into a yucky face as he shifted in Neptune's palm. Baby…the moon tilted his head up to the planet, eyes filled with discomfort and pain that cut Neptune's breath off.
No. No, no, no–your baby is in pain. You failed to protect. Again.
Fear spiked in his core, ringing in his ears and drowning out every other thought. Proteus' voice pitched higher, the quiet, strained words raking its claws through Neptune's core, "It's–it's too hot."

The draught of August air which warms her calves as she creeps down the stairs is an enormous relief. Years of suspicion and habit still raise some alarm bells that it's a sign of a home invasion, but a more nature-oriented resident might want to let some air in, to keep from the house permanently smelling of smoke, old wood and ghost-scented candles.
Of course, it's been the same culprit for house-freshening purposes and for home invasions. Rozenmarine is a maiden of many talents.

Summary
After breaking a lot of their bones in a fight with Nightmare's gang, all Ink needs to do to heal is drink from their vials of paint. It should be no problem-- they can't feel physical pain, so lifting their fractured arm to pick up a vial is easy. But Dream is looking for them. They could heal their own bones easily, but only Dream's attention can heal the aching void in their chest.

[This is set in the same multiverse as the other fic in the series and is a direct prequel to it, but can be read as a stand-alone fic.
The only context you need is that Ink and Dream are a team for (what they said were) purely strategic reasons, because they both think of themselves as "not real people" and "not capable of having friends/relationships," but then they got attached to each other as the only company they think they're "allowed to" have, and now they're desperately affection starved and pretending they don't care.]Series
