“I’ll be your hands,” she lowered her voice just the slightest bit, now almost reverent. “And your eyes under the sea.”
The words slipped between them like an unadorned vow. Yet it somehow sank into Caitlyn’s chest like weightless gravity.
Her whole body went still.
She forgot how to breathe.
For a second, she almost thought she was underwater again, but not drowning. Just suspended and floating. Held.
OR
Caitlyn, a marine biologist, and Vi, a scuba diver, go on a six-month research expedition in Jervis Bay, Australia. And everything becomes sort of a midsummer night's dream.

Cait smiles, and the pressure on Vi’s jaw intensifies. She can feel the insides of her cheeks sinking into her teeth, and it makes her heart full. “You’re precious when you’re drunk,” Cait says, her voice echoing around Vi’s eyes.
As Cait leans forward with the prettiest smile in the world, Vi reaches and pulls her along into her lap. Her arms rest against Cait’s waist, and she can feel the warmth of her skin through the thin fabric of her nightshirt. Something falls out of Vi’s chest, something airy and soft, and Vi realizes she’s laughing. “Who says I’m drunk?”

Caitlyn laughed into the phone’s speakers and it made Vi’s heart stutter. It always did.
“Perhaps… I did have a bit too much to drink.” Caitlyn slurred and Vi didn’t have to probe further to know that her girlfriend was probably a few more inches away from being wasted.

The attendant grins. “My Pa calls them water guns,” She picks one up and holds it out.

“Hey,” Vi says, running a thumb soothingly along Caitlyn’s pulse, and though Caitlyn doesn’t break her focus, the tension she holds in her jaw relaxes. “I happen to have firsthand experience on how good you are with your hands, Cupcake.” There’s a husk across her tone that she doesn’t really mean to let out, but— well, that’s a lie. That’s exactly what she’s going for. “You can handle a little haircut.”
Caitlyn shudders as the words meet the air. Vi tries not to smirk in satisfaction.
“You can’t say such things while I’m holding a pair of shears so close to your neck,” Caitlyn says lowly, voice dripping down like molasses. “It’s dangerous.” Her chiding whispers dance across Vi’s cheekbone, the blunt side of the blade making contact with Vi’s skin, and— oh. Vi’s definitely the one shuddering now.
Vi chuckles to hide the shiver curling up her spine. “I really affect you that much?”
Caitlyn hums, dragging her fingers through Vi’s damp bangs to measure their length. “Coy isn’t a good look on you.”

It all started with a note - written in the ugliest handwriting Caitlyn had ever seen.
"I used your bed. Funny fact, you smell like cupcakes."
In the break room, they had six beds distributed for use among shifts. But Caitlyn's bed wasn't part of that set. No, she had bought a seventh piece of furniture with her own money - with a mattress specifically made for her shoulder and lower back pains.
Everyone knew they shouldn't lie down there. Except, apparently, the new hire.
As a first offense, Caitlyn decided to let it slide, with a simple note on the bed.
"Property of Caitlyn Kiramman."
Maybe the mistake had been due to ignorance, after all. Although, three days later, to her complete displeasure, came her response.
"Good to know you have a name, Cupcake. PS: your mattress is really good."
