Summary
It's easier, after John Kramer dies. It finally feels like freedom. They can just be normal, boring men again, living their lives, arguing over which groceries to buy, politely– or not so politely, depending on who picks up the landline– declining the journalists who call them. Adam stops looking over his shoulder when he slouches home from his shitty retail job, and Lawrence starts pumping his own gas again instead of staying locked in his car and paying the attendant.
Life goes on, and in a sick way, the game sort of worked, because now Adam’s eager to live the rest of it.
He prefers not to think about it that way. He prefers to think it’s Lawrence’s presence in his life that’s the new element, that it’s him who’s made the change in Adam from passively suicidal to actively looking forward to waking up in the morning. He just wishes they had one solid thing in common, now that they’re leaving the shared horror of the bathroom behind.
And then they find the throughline.

Summary
Steve has magic, he just doesn't know it. He doesn't believe Dustin no matter how many times he insists that Steve's food is magic, because that is preposterous. Slowly others start to recognize that Steve has magic too, and then Billy comes along with accusations of a love potion when Neil gets a hold of some cookies Steve made and starts acting nice.

Steve expects a lighter to be tossed at him or even just lit and held up in front of his face, instead a flame sparks to life at the end of the cigarette held between his lips. Steve sucks in with a startled delighted laugh. He has seen Billy do this from afar, use his magic to light a cigarette but he has never seen him do it up close.
“That’s so cool.” Steve says before he can stop himself, face heating, why is it that he can never just be cool around Billy? “You ever do that to pick up chicks?” Steve asks, trying to save face and feeling like even more of a dumbass.
“Trying to pick you up.” Billy mumbles under his breath before making a show of coughing.
“What?” Steve asks the words too low for him to make out, he tries to sink into his jacket, shoulders around his ears as Billy starts laughing, sure he is being laughed at.

“Danny!” A tired looking kid in a pink puffer jacket, pink backpack and Pichachu knit hat ran up to me on 54th Street. I nearly jumped out of my skin when she wrapped her arms around my knees. What the fuck? She turned what should have been big brown eyes up to me but they were clotted with an otherworldly control. A woman in scrubs looking just as tired came running up and grabbed the girl’s arm. She looked at me with the same dead gray eyes.
“Danny, it's not safe to be out,” she said. I shook the kid off and walked away. The mother stared at me slack jawed, her long curly hair catching in her open mouth.
“Yeesh,” I said. Quite the trick. I should have known Armand would find another disguise to get out of facing me

Post The Battle of Starcourt, Billy moves in with Steve and tries to put his life back together.

It started with cookies. If Billy could make cookies, just simple sweet treats, if he could do that with out ruining anything, then maybe it would count as a first step towards being okay.Getting comfortable in the kitchen when he wasn’t comfortable anywhere else could be a first step towards normal.
Sharing cookies with with Steve so Steve would light up smiling sunshiney like a goddamn gorgeous doofus could be a first step towards a new life that didn’t have Neil and didn’t have secrets and hurt and pain all the damn time.
A first step towards fixing up his heart and maybe a little bump of courage so the next time Steve hugged him, Billy would be brave enough to hug back.
Chocolate chip cookies.
Billy could do this.

Billy picks up a butterfly bandage, holds it between his fingers for Steve to see. Waits for Steve to drop his chin in a nod, and then presses it into place against Steve’s busted eyebrow. It’s the best Billy has to give.
This probably isn’t going to work out. This thing Billy’s been trying to have with Steve since he got to Hawkins. Steve’s got these soft edges where Billy’s all blunt and sharp.
Billy drags his fingertips down the side of Steve’s face, presses his thumb against the scar he didn’t leave, and lifts a brow. “How many fights do you lose, Harrington?”
Steve grins, a half-formed thing that is sharp and sad at the same time. “All of them.”

The sound that pitched the back-end of Wayne Enterprises' float into chaos sounded approximately like a bottle rocket. Unclear, whether the perpetrator had launched his distraction from the crowd and climbed aboard or emerged from somewhere within—but, suddenly, there he was.
“Mr., Ms., and Mx., step right on up,” crowed Jerome, his bare, freckled arms spread wide as Wayne Enterprises employees screamed and gave him a wide berth. “It's time for the greatest show on earth! Or, uh...nope, scratch that. I'm giving the rest of these weirdos way too much credit. Greatest show in the tri-state area! Just roll with it.”
Leaning heavily with his jaw pressed into his right palm, Oswald left-handedly upended a liberal amount of costly champagne into one of his empty glasses. “There goes the neighborhood,” he slurred.
