But when sabotage, scandal, and colonial unrest threaten the fragile peace of a post-war world, she finds herself pulled deeper and deeper into the viper’s nest of Fire Nation politics…and closer to its ruler. As rumors swirl and tempers flare between the Ambassador and the Fire Lord, Katara finds a helping hand, and unexpected solace, in the brother of one of her students. In a nation built on blood and lies, she must decide: how far is she willing to go to protect those who cannot protect themselves…and what will it cost her?
This is the first act of a five-act story. Act I is complete and comes to, what I consider to be, a narratively satisfying conclusion. I will be posting the remaining chapters of Act I every day during Zutara Month 2025.

“Regression,” the healer says, watching Katara across the room, playing dolls with an endlessly patient Suki. “Cases this drastic are uncommon, but if a child is forced to grow up too quickly, to act like an adult before they’re ready, sometimes the mind tries to get that time back, when it sees an opportunity.”
And that is so deeply true of Katara. But it’s true of Sokka too. True of all of them. But Sokka isn’t falling apart. Sokka isn’t running around the palace acting like an eight year old.
Katara was eight when their mother was killed.

When Azula challenged Zuko to an Agni Kai on the day of Sozin’s Comet, she set in motion a succession by right of challenge. The Agni Kai left Azula defeated, and Zuko claimed his ascendency.
With Zuko on the mend, the Fire Nation prepares for his formal coronation.
But a faction of careful observers approach with a problem: before Azula was defeated, she left Zuko mortally wounded, unable to complete the Agni Kai. The bending master who actually defeated Azula, the true Fire Lord by right of challenge…was Katara of the Southern Water Tribe.
