“Search for him? Rex Lapis is dead. We can’t search for a dead man!”
The scholar scratches his head. “Yes, as I’m aware. But you do know that our gods do not truly die? They are reborn, just as Lesser Lord Kusanali was after Greater Lord Rukkhadevata’s passing.”
Silence.
Zhongli can hear his peaceful future being whisked away on the sea breeze and he sets his cup down, the taste too bitter to continue.

Contracts are the bedrock of Liyue, as Rex Lapis wills it. Thus, in pursuance of His Ideals, the Lord of Geo has been exceptionally meticulous in all manners of paperwork, and so long ago had assigned the Qixing as representatives of and intermediaries for the people of Liyue, entrusting the institution with copies upon copies of all manners of contracts pertaining to the rule of Liyue.
However, even the Prime Adepti is not infallible, for His Last Contract has given rise to a delicate, and difficult, international situation.
How, you may ask? Well, let us recount the time when the Lord of Anemo becomes the Regent of Liyue and the chaos that ensues—all for the want of an old, forgotten contract Morax has yet to cancel before faking His death.
Update: undergoing some rewrite to incorporate details as laid out in this collection of Akademiya-esque manuscripts; please give it a read for better context. Epilogue pending: chapter two updated on 16-04-2025; chapter ten published on the 14-06-2025; work marked as complete on 19-06-2026.

Summary
Venti remembers the man in the alleyway, lit almost ablaze in the lamplight. The gold in his eyes. The meteor orbiting his shoulders. His hands had been as steady as the earth, and when he held Venti, he had called him—
—a name he hadn’t heard in a long, long time.
After hearing news of Morax’s death, Venti travels to Liyue to honor a tradition that the Original Seven had long held: each time one of them passed on, those that remained would gather to drink a toast and say their final goodbyes.
He figures Morax deserves this, at the least, even if it’s a party of one. He didn’t think it would be so hard to do it alone.
Drunk, lonely, and despairing, Venti takes to wandering the streets of Liyue and stumbles upon a well-dressed stranger by the name of Zhongli, who reminds him far too much of what he’s just lost.

Once again, she’s unfortunately right. Because the painting that he’s standing in front of right now has Venti as the main subject, spotlights shining onto the scroll, making every brushstroke glisten.
Oh, archons.
So it turns out Zhongli may have made more than a few yearning-induced paintings of Venti during his three thousand years or so of being in love. Good thing Venti will never find out… right?
