Beyond the railing of the stairs, I could look straight out the living room windows to the forest beyond. Between the eyes of the trees, I could see the smear of the clouds, the mists and the glimmer of the lake. Perhaps the most significant difference between here and there. The bullpen was a cramped little rectangle of six cubicles—two pressed along the left wall, four crowding the right. At one end sat Clark Kent, shoulders slightly hunched, the fluorescent lights catching on the lenses of his glasses. Across from him, at the far cubicle, Jean Russo pretended to busy herself with paperwork she wasn’t actually reading.
Clark rubbed his jaw again. The same spot, same motion. The kind of repetitive tic you only notice after the third or fourth time.
Jean’s eyes flicked up from her desk. She watched him for a beat, debating whether to say anything. Her lips parted, shut, then parted again. Finally, she leaned just close enough over the divider to let her voice slip across the space between them.
“Hey,” she asked softly. “You okay?”

My family left me a complicated and burdensome inheritance. Though I wouldn’t realise it for some time…there would come a day when the powers that be would hide the dreadful details of our legacy from everyone, including me. But the ‘powers that be’ underestimated me. They underestimated how much I remember of the time before—before the dreaded Kyuubi attack.

I had been rereading the first few chapters of This Bites! when an idea had hit me. 'What if...'
I then shook my head, Self-Inserts and OCs weren't my cup of Tea. And generally, they weren't anyone's. This Bites! was just an exception.'Well,' I had thought, clicking the 'New Work' button and donning a challenging grin on my face. 'I was always a Tea enthusiast. All flavours are all welcome. Self-Insert into Self-Insert, here I come!'
