Summary
It’s been two or three hours. Buck has been cleared by Hen, by Eddie, by Chim and is finally given permission to go home. He is bone tired, his mouth tastes like dust and he is looking forward to dropping on his couch, putting on a nature documentary and passing out.
Life, it turns out, has other plans.
Eddie is waiting by his Jeep. His white shirt is dirtied to the point of non-recovery and his hair filled with nearly as much dust as Buck’s lungs. But he’s smiling, like not a day has passed since he left for El Paso, and Buck fills his chest flutter with longing for a past simpler time.

“In our…kitchen?” Christopher asks.
“Exactly,” Buck agrees. “It’s a nice kitchen. And my favorite guys are in it. Just like…just like normal.”
“Okay,” Christopher shrugs. “I don’t remember you being this weird.”

“Dad,” Chris called, and when there was no response he pushed it open. “Dad, you have to drive me to—”
His dad was there, still asleep, laying with most of his face smushed in his pillow and looking dead to the world. Also there, half-sitting up and tugging the covers up to his neck, was Buck.
“—school,” Chris finished, looking at Buck. Buck looked back, his eyes wide and frantic. For a couple of seconds they both just looked at each other.
“Hi, Buck,” he said. “Um.”
“Heeey, Chris,” Buck said. His voice cracked a little on the hey, which would probably have been funny under any other circumstance.

“Hey,” Eddie calls, twisting his shoulder as he stuffs his arm into his jacket sleeve, “take a coat, bud. It’s cold today.”
Christopher, already halfway to the door, pauses to scowl at Eddie. “It’s sunny,” he says.
“It’s supposed to be windy,” Buck supplies, doing up the last button on his coat.
“And it’s December,” Eddie adds.
Christopher rolls his eyes. “In California,” he counters, unimpressed.
Eddie sighs. “It gets cold in California.”
“No,” Christopher says, impatient, “it doesn’t.” Then he’s out the door. Coatless.
“Stubborn,” Buck comments, bumping his shoulder into Eddie’s. “Reminds me of someone.”
Eddie huffs a laugh.

“I know Buck loves me. And you,” he declares; it's a simple fact, plain as day. “And when you love someone that big, you love them enough to never stop trying."
Eddie falls quiet at that, but he knows Chris can feel his whole body shake as he starts to cry harder, because his son is 12 going on 50 with how wise he sounds.
“So…" Chris continues, "he’s gonna come back to us. I'm gonna get him back. Because he’s your partner.”
Chris doesn't elaborate on his definition of partner, and Eddie is a coward who decidedly avoids trying to define it himself.
“Because I’m his kid. Because he’s my Buck.”

Or: The events of In Another Life, but mostly from Chris' perspective. He knows Buck will find his way back to them... but Chris figures, if he's given the opportunity to help nudge Buck a little, there's no harm in that.

While Chris is in Texas, he thinks of everything that lead him there. He adjusts to how different everything is, and faces complicated emotions as he talks with Eddie and Buck throughout.

Eddie wakes up to being shaked by his son Christopher.
"Hey, Mijo" Eddie smiles at his son and pulls him into the bed with him. "Daddy, you need to stay awake. Bucky will be here soon" says Christopher who's beaming with excitement. Eddie turns to look at the clock next to his bed on the side table and groans. "Christopher, its 6:30am its way too early to be awake and Buck won't be here until this afternoon, plus we have to go shopping first. so lets go back to sleep for another hour".
Christopher sighs and replies "Okaaay Daddy". he shuffles closer to his dad and then closes his eyes and they are both off to dreamland for a little bit before they have to get up and get ready for the day.
