Summary

Summary
Mel Medarda to this day still was unsure what possessed her to go wandering down towards the Undercity late at night. Yet, she couldn't be unhappy with what happened from there: finding a young, crying girl who needed a second chance in life, and choosing to take her in. Raising her, taking her to therapy, trying to do better for the Undercity which her adoptive daughter came from. Everything seemed to be looking up, but life had to throw one more curveball her way, with the knowledge that Jinx's 'dead' sister was very much not dead, and instead was trapped in a prison that should have been shut down long ago. At least Jinx can have her sister back, right?
If only it were that simple. Vi spent her formative years locked up in a prison where she had to fight to survive every day. She never got a chance to learn how to live. So now, it was up to those who had come together to care for Jinx to try and help Vi learn how to live once more.

And even as Caitlyn tried her best to distract her - getting Sevika to spar with her, taking her down to Jericho’s for mid-week impromptu dates, praising the work she was getting done with the Firelights until she blushed and couldn’t hide a smile - there was always something dark hovering, shadowing the corners of Vi’s smiles; sometimes further away, sometimes breathing down her nape. The weight of it loomed. Vi seemed used to its presence, but Caitlyn swore it only grew bolder - like it was merely sharpening its teeth while biding its time.
No one else could see it, but Caitlyn could. Vi’s left eye kept twitching whenever it was close by.
(Or: Caitlyn and Vi are working hard to rebuild Piltover and Zaun after the war. But when Caitlyn finds out the truth about Vi's time in Stillwater, the two cities are forced to reckon with the past if they want to carve out a future.)

Dr. Kiramman steers her through the chaos and plants her in a chair. Does something to her arm that hurts like fuck, then drapes her in bags of ice and wraps her in a sling. Blinds her with a pen light—“Called it,” she mumbles when he confirms she’s concussed—and presses two pills and a warm mug into her hand. It smells herbaceous. Familiar.
“I brought the good stuff from home,” Dr. Kiramman confesses, and it takes her a moment to understand he means tea. “Extra honey for you. I know you haven’t acquired the taste.”
He’s right in that she only actually drank it once, the first time it was offered—the afternoon they spoke to the Council, several lifetimes ago. But she tasted it just this morning in Caitlyn’s mouth, grassy and sweet. So she pops the pills and takes a sip. Tries not to think about whether that terrified kiss over breakfast was their last. “I want to see her.”
After the war, Vi and Cait recover, and rebuild.

Vi heard the remaining muttering die down, and she knew Sheriff Kiramman had succeeded in putting them at ease.
Despite herself, Vi scowled. Fires were their domain, and their previous experiences with the police didn’t exactly make her optimistic about this round.
Still, there was something about the sheriff that made it hard to look away. Whatever it was, Vi hated that it made her want to listen.

"Oh, that I am confident in." Caitlyn spoke and once more Vi found herself fighting against being enchanted. "I can't say I've been one to frequent the fights that many of our colleagues adore but after hearing the tales of the Hound, I admit I found myself curious." She spoke with a knowing smile on her face, the intrigue she spoke with was now gone, having seemingly made up her own mind. She stepped closer to Vi until she was within arms reach and it took everything within Vi to keep herself as still as she physically could. Though she was unsure if she wanted to run away or step closer. So much so that she didn't even notice the impossibly smooth hand coming up to her face.
"And what a fine dog she is." Caitlyn whispered, brushing her thumb against Vi's bottom lip, tracing the cut that had just barely closed and applying enough pressure for it to open again. Vi inhaled sharply, wincing ever so slightly at the sting.

Good job, stable family, more money than any one person had any right to have, a fiancée who loved her. Everything was coming up Kiramman, as far as the universe was concerned. Vi was pretty sure this was as good as it was going to get for her. Fresh out of prison, with a roof over her head, a good job, a best friend that hadn't abandoned her, and her sister...she finally had her sister back in her life again. Her life felt good for the first time in a long time. Not perfect, because perfect was a fantasy, at least for Zaunites like her. They didn't get perfect, not like the Pilties did. But for Vi, this had to be as good as it gets.

Piltover is a pretty city, quaint, with lots of tourist charm in the summer, but the rest of the seasons are bleak and gray. Otherwise, nobody would come here unless they lived here. Vi steps onto the platform and takes in a deep breath of the familiar air; salt and ice fill her lungs. She coughs a little with the cold. The train doors shut behind her with a clunk and the brakes release and the train chugs away slowly, leaving her where she stands, alone in the yellow light of the platform’s light bulbs.

The dragon keeps her distance this time, not daring to approach Caitlyn again. The prince dares only a few more steps into the clearing, grass tickling the edges of her knees. The dragon lowers her head, steel eyes narrowed. But… not threatening. Caitlyn can hardly breathe at the sight of them again.
“It’s you,” Caitlyn hears herself whisper as she crouches in the tall grass. The dragon chuffs, nostrils flaring with a low rumbling sound. She can see the way the muscles tense even from here a whole clearing away.
They sit there, unmoving with a sea of wild grass between them until the sound of another pair of wings whooshing high above startles them both. Caitlyn doesn’t move, heart thrumming as she waits for the moment to turn, for the dragon to remember herself and end Caitlyn once and for all. Or for her companion to land and finish the job. But instead, red wings take to the skies again, the clouds swallowing her whole.

Maybe in finding the truth, they find something more. Something that tastes a little too much like love.
